Football dominates weekend sports blotter

Story PictureGood evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

We visited the M.C.C. Grounds yesterday evening for the Monster Super League match-up as Kraal Road hosted the defending champion Texmar Boys in week six. Immediately the visiting champ displays its prowess with this left foot bomb from Arnold Torres that allows Eldon Linarez to display his skills in goal for Kraal Road. In fact, today Linarez has to work for the money and this long range missile from Jiovanni Torres certainly reminds him of that. It’s more demands on the keeper from Kraal Road when Gilmore Palacio launches this half volley but so far so good for Mr. Linarez. In the meantime, Norman “Tilliman” Nunez faces his former teammates for the first time at the M.C.C. Grounds and he certainly gives them something to think about right here. At the twenty-second minute Torres beats his man to find Tilliman Nunez who finds the back of the net as Texmar goes up 1-zip. Kraal Road tries to respond immediately off the set piece in what can be deemed as their only highlight of the first half. Talk about work hard for the money, people we know that Arnold Torres didn’t have had intention but we do agree with Linarez; it hurts nevertheless fortunately, the goal keeper would continue. In early second half action Torres tries to inflict more damage, this time off a different sort but he drills the pill outside the sticks. But here comes Kraal Road as Leon Jones sets table for Delroy Andrews who fires, beats the keeper but a well positioned John King denies him the goal. For sure folks, Norman Tilliman shows no mercy for his former boys and would have had his second goal of the match had the puddle in front of the goal halt that momentum. The mud again conspires to deny Tilliman his second when he pushes this right foot past Linarez. However, this time Lyndon Brooks reaches the hall first to give Texmar a 2-zip lead at the seventieth minute. Kraal Road begins to build up the pressure as it’s getting late in the ballgame but for a second time today John King digs it out the goal mouth. The consolation goal does come for Kraal Road when Withfield Patnett pounces on this loose ball to fire this grass head burner to make it a 2-1 final score in injury time.

In other action around the league, Valley Renaissance proved too much for Lake-Collet Survivors in a 9-3 route, San Felipe Barcelona beat Tsunami F.C. 3-2, Cayo South doubled Lucky Strike 4-2 and Barrio Fino blanked Western Rebels 1-zip. After six weeks the standings in the Super League look like this. Texmar leads with fifteen points, Barrio Fino shows thirteen, San Felipe Barcelona and Valley Renaissance both show twelve points apiece, Kraal Road and Cayo South ten points each, Tsunami four, Western Rebels three and Lucky Strike three.

Looking at the schedule in week seven of the Belize Bank Super League, Texmar Boys tackle Tsunami down South and Lake-Collet Survivors hold port against Cayo United at the M.C.C.; both matches are scheduled for Saturday. On Sunday Lucky Strike hosts Western Rebels, Barrio Fino gets a visit from Kraal Road and Valley Renaissance travels to the People’s Stadium, O.W. for a date with San Felipe Barcelona.

Turning to the BPFL RF&G Cup Tournament, in action over the weekend to close off regular season play F.C. Belize dropped San Pedro Dolphins 1-zip. The B.D.F. marched over Nizhee Corozal 3-nil, Suga Boys Juventus humbled Hankook Verdes 2-nil, Georgetown was held to a 2-2 draw at home by Benque D.C. while Llagulei survived in a 2-1 score against Wagiya. Thus, in the North Zone F.C. Belize finishes with twenty-six points to become the number one seed in the playoffs, Corozal makes it with fourteen, Juventus with twelve and San Pedro with eleven while Verdes will not get the chance to defend its title after finishing last in this zone with nine points. In the South Zone Llagulei is the number one seed with nineteen points, the B.D.F. has seventeen, Ibayani fifteen and Benque D.C. nine which means Wagiya, who finished with four points, will not make it post season but that’s no surprise. Unfortunately, at press time, the schedule for this weekend when things are scheduled to get off had not been released. As soon as we get it we’ll certainly pass it on.

In Cycling news, the fourth annual Bypass Criterium is set for eight a.m. Sunday, October eleventh, at O.W. featuring three categories of racing; five miles for tinymites, forty miles for junior riders, while the open race will travel for sixty miles. Registration will be done at the technical meeting inside the City Center conference room seven p.m. on Thursday.

On the cricket scene, all matches were postponed over the weekend and things should resume this Saturday. Surprise of Lemonal will face Crooked Tree’s Brilliant who leads the three game semi-s 1-zip. Excellence of Double Head and Wicked Eleven of Flowers Bank also go back to work this Saturday with Excellence leading in that series1-nil.

Finally folks, from November twenty-fourth to the twenty-eighth Illinois State University Redbirds Division one Softball Team begins a tour here in the jewel. They play the national Softball Team on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday inside Roger’s Stadium. However, they’ll also see action against the city champ, Telemedia, that’s on Monday to open things off against the national team and they will play the junior male team on Tuesday. So stay tuned.
