Wesley organizes self defense training for women

Story PictureIf you are a damsel in distress, there is an upcoming opportunity to acquire techniques and tactics to defend yourself from any aggression whether home invasions, robbery, rape, or domestic violence. And that is because the Wesley Junior College is sponsoring a training programme for women, including mothers and young girls. The trainer is S. Renee Wentz, who has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and is an experienced teacher of personal safety. Dean of the Wesley Junior College, Winsome Arana, says that women are most vulnerable so the institution is stepping up to the plate.

Winsome Arana, Dean, Wesley Junior College
“As a junior college in this, area we are seeking to reach out to the members of this community and involve them in self improvement, in learning something just for their own benefit. So, this is going to be the first of many attempts and many endeavours to reach out to the community and have them being a part of Wesley Junior College. I think it will give a woman, a girl, a lot more confidence in walking on the main streets of Belize City, knowing that you are able to defend yourself in some way. It’s not meant to provoke aggressiveness in a woman so that she goes out and attack anybody but it’s meant to help her to protect herself, to protect her children, in the case of any attacks against her.”

“Is this going to be a one-day event or will there be follow-ups?”

Winsome Arana
“It will start as a one-day event. This class will take a maximum of thirty students. If we find that there is a big demand for it, then we will repeat the class.”

The three-hour, self-defense workshop and training starts at nine-thirty on October eighteenth at the college’s compound on Yarborough Road. Registration is twenty dollars per person and ends October ninth.
