James Adderley has the latest in sporting news
Good evening I’m James Adderley and we welcome you to this week’s rush of Sports Monday. We’re off to the MCC Grounds where week five of the Belize Bank Super League playoffs brought City Boys United to its moment of truth. In their role as host today they would have to beat the always dangerous Nizhee Corozal or see their championship hopes vanish into thin air, especially after last week’s 2-1 loss to Placencia Assassin. Of course Nizhee Corozal also comes in understanding that today’s ballgame is super important so they go to their number one striker Michael Whittaker whose shot at goal crashes against the crossbar. In reply City Boys try to capitalize off this centre from Jason Young but Benito Morreira gives up his body for Nizhee Corozal to prevent Whitfield Patnett from getting ahead on it. For sure folks, Benito Morreira works real hard for the money today as he again goes down after being challenged by Jason Young. Mercifully, he would continue. Andrew Allen then gets this chance to give Corozal the lead but the left foot grounder travels outside the far upright. At the half, the ballgame remains scoreless.
So we go to second half and it’s Nizhee searching for the goal off this set piece but the shot by Antonio Castillo rises over the crossbar. We’re thirteen minutes into the half when Whitfield Patnett centers off the right wing, Tyronne Mushcamp keeps it alive to Dalton Cayetano who gives City Boys a 1-zip lead. Immediately Corozal begins to push for the equalizer. Michael Whittaker pushes this across the goal mouth to Sergio Villanueva whose right away blast bounces off the far upright. It’s more Corozal when Whittaker gets off this chip shot with the right foot only to see Charlie Slusher deny him the goal. Sergio Villanueva then attacks off the right wing but the right foot bouncer inches outside the sticks. The onslaught ain’t over yet people as Antonio Castillo finds Andrew Allen who misses the target from point-blank range. When the long whistle blows it brings relief to the beleaguered City Boys more importantly it gives them a huge three points that gets them back on top.

“This second half here we came out because we know we have to win. Our back was against the wall. It was either do or die for us and we surely didn’t want to die so we had to go on and get a win today.”
In the other Super League match up Placencia Assassin doubled Hattieville 2-1 Saturday night to now total seven points. Thus the standings look like this: City Boys United show eight points and so does Nizhee Corozal, Placencia Assassin has seven and Hattieville with four is now out of the championship picture. This weekend the semi0final round concludes with City Boys hosting Hattieville on Sunday at the M.C.C. grounds while on Saturday night Placencia Assassin and Nizhee Corozal will battle for a spot in the finals.
In cycling news, Saturday’s forty-two mile race presented by the BCA on the Burrell Boom circuit was taken by Peter Choto of Zamir in uncontested fashion in a time of 01:51:24. Zamir swept all top four station prizes with Gregory Lovell second, Allen Castillo third and Armidez Rives fourth while Kelvin Tillett of C-Ray rounds out the top five.
Turning to the basketball scene, it was do or die Friday night inside the City Center for Atlantic Bank as they faced FirstCaribbean Bank in game two of their Inter Department Basketball semi-final series. We are in the second quarter as Jacobs Leslie of FirstCaribbean misses this shot but Shamir Martinez taps it back for the successful put back cutting what was a twelve point deficit in the first quarter to four. However, at the other end, Darwin Elijio extends the separation with this three pointer from the top. Elijio would hit eight points tonight. Hector Locke then gets this pass from Captain Jermain Tillett to land two of his thirteen game points. In the meantime, this crossover dribble by Ian Ferrera leaves Jerome Ellis helpless on the court as he streaks in for the two points and it doesn’t matter that both players are called “Perry”. Darwin “Doggy” Elijio comes up with a big time bucket in traffic right here and at the half Atlantic Bank is leading 36-27.
In the third, FirstCaribbean/Quan strikes back. Perry Ellis dished to Jaheed Smith and he sinks the bucket for two of his nine points. Clifton Gentle then finds Eldon Anderson who goes glass for two points and would make it three the old fashion way. But the charge began to fizzle when Ferrera finds Hector Locke and he delivers the mid range jumper. Erwin Orosco hooks up with Perry Ferrera who works the baseline for two of his game high eighteen points. At the end of three the Atlantic Bank lead is eleven. They would go on to post the 62-47 victory to force a decisive game three on Sunday.
Well the news is in Atlantic Bank is into the championship series after burning FirstCaribbean/Quan 69-68 in overtime play yesterday. Of course, waiting in the wings was the run and slash Tuff e Nuff who proved that Belize Telemedia was not tough enough to take them out by completing the sweep Friday night. Tyronne Edwards was on top of his game tonight as he sinks this jumper for two of his game high twenty-four points and also dished out five assists. His brother, Ashton Edwards also came out sizzling, striking for three points here. He would put up twenty-two points in this one to go along with six boards and four steals. Tuff e Nuff shows a 16-11 lead at the end of the first. Marvin Bay Castillo had a good game for Telemedia as he drives into the paint to lay up two of his eight points. Lupito Acosta keeps his team in the race with this big time three pointer, Acosta would lead Telemedia with twelve points. Three point king Jamal Kelly then launches for three. He would finish with eleven points. And at the half BTL is only down 14-5.
And yes, folks in the third this conversion by Marvin Bay Castillo gives the phone company its first lead of the night 34-33. Tuff e Nuff comes right back by reinstating the Edwards to Edwards connection as Tyronne finds Ashton who lands three. Tyronne then wants three and he gets three. For a moment back there it looked like Lupito Acosta would have put BTL on his back as he leads the big three. And on the very next play lands his third three from the other side to give BTL a 44-43 lead. As expected Tuff e Nuff replies. Tyronne Edwards goes through the BTL defense for the two and ties the ballgame at 45-apiece. Tyrone Edwards then penetrates again and again rings up two points. It’s more Tyronne in the fourth when he wheels and deals through traffic for this impressive banker. And let’s not forget this dagger from Ashton Edwards. Tuff e Nuff goes on to post the 64-53 big W, completing the sweep on their way to the three game championship series. This series between Tuff e Nuff and Atlantic Bank now gets off this Wednesday with game two set for Friday. On Friday’s undercard will be the battle for third place between FirstCaribbean/Quan and Telemedia Digicell.
