Slight improvement in regional high school exams

juan vargas

The preliminary results of the Caribbean Examinations Council exams also known as the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) are in and they show improvement over last year’s. A majority of the two thousand, six hundred high school students who sat this year’s exams back in May have either moved on to tertiary education or entered the workforce. Their performance shows significant improvement in Math and English, that’s according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Education. CXC Local Registrar, Juan Vargas, says the top scorers will not announced until next month.

Juan Vargas, CXC Local Registrar

“We received the results last week and we have made some brief analysis on the numbers and the numbers are pointing us to some very interesting things that we highlighted in a release that we sent to the media, noh.  Most notably the thing that we want to highlight is the total overall result in terms of acceptable grades, noh.  If we make a comparison between last year’s result and this year’s result we noted overall that we had a slight increase of 4.3 [percent] for the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate or the CSEC as it’s known for the secondary schools.  We noted that last year we had an overall result of 77.7 for acceptable grades one to three.  This year we noted that we had 81.97 percent grade so that would give us a 4.3 increase in terms of the CSEC results.  On the other hand if we look at the results for the CAPE examination or Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination we note that there was also a slight increase in the results alright.  If we look at the overall results for last year we noted that we had a 90.8 percent as compared to this year which we had 91.12 percent in the acceptable range one to five for the CAPE subjects.”

Candidates with outstanding performance qualify for tuition scholarships and merit awards from the Ministry of Education and other corporate partners in education.

Good news. Now, what schools need additional attention & how will you go about bringing them up to par?

  2. MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST says:

This is good news, and these students should be awarded.
Only one problem though, will there be enough jobs for those entering into the work place.

  3. Proud says:

This is GREAT! I think what we need to do more in Belize is have Entrepreneural Classes. Small Business Training Programs for students who want to start their own business. There is NOT enough jobs out there, so these students must create their own. If they do have these programs, then they need to be promoted better.

We have smart people in Belize, people that like to be challenged mentally, we need to challenge them.
