Who should pay for schools’ garbage collection?

On Tuesday we reported on the financial woes that most of Belize City’s public schools will face when the Belize Waste Control discontinues free collection of garbage. The company’s General Manager, George Lamb, told News Five that after providing the free service for nineteen years it has become unaffordable but that he is willing to negotiate with the schools.  Well meetings with the schools were held today and will resume on Thursday when it is expected that a final decision will be made on how much the schools are expected to pay. Lamb also told us that a business would pay a hundred and seventy six dollars per week for the service but that would be too costly for the schools. He said that for years the Muslim,  and a few private schools, have been paying and when all schools get on board, it will work out cheaper for them.

Im my opinion i think that all schools should be free of charge for garbage disposal… Our children are the furture leaders of Belize. Times are hard, but the good government we expect the current party to be should find a way to avoid this caous. thanks

I am hopeful that the department of education will dig deep down into their treasure box and pay a monthly fee to end this issue. If they are prepared to let garbage stand in the way of Belizean kids future then something is truly wrong with those people. Like they stated joined the payment list and then the montly cost will be less, can’t beat that.

If they are not willing to pay for the price of garbage, the parents will have to pay for it.

to my view that gov. should pay at least 3/4 of the cost and the school the 1/4 of the cost which is more acceptable for schools. but should fall totally on the shoulders of the minister of education to find a better solution to this problem. so lets see P. FABER shoulder this like a responsable minister and give our kids a chance with this hard time we’re going through.

  5. Friend says:

Amir the word “free” does not exist in practice. somebody have to pay! The only thing that is always discussed is “Who” will pay and “how much”

so the “good government” is coming to u! just begin to prepare ok

Free for one (or some) does not mean free for all. Someone always ends up paying and the garbage company just spread that cost and everyone else pays. Get away from that colonial mentality. Nothing is coming from England for free anymore. Start all need to start paying for every service we get.

There is no such thing as a free meal ticket, at the end of it someone has to pick up the bill.

I am one of those persons who strongly believes that government should not give handouts to anyone and that every single Citizen should work hard to get the “things” he or she needs to make his or her life better. In the case of the schools, I wouldn’t mind if GOB picked up the bill for this one and instead of them riding around in late model cars they use those cars one extra year.
