Public schools won’t have to pay for garbage collection… for now

As we said earlier in the newscast, there is still no agreement in place between the Belize Waste Control and primary schools over new fees for the collection of their garbage. The only development is that Belize Waste Control promised in a meeting on Wednesday that it has eased its position slightly on the matter.  Initially, the letter which the company sent out to the schools informed that effective next Monday, August thirtieth, the schools would need to start paying for the service.  But following meetings with some of the schools, the Manager of BWC, George Lamb, decided to continue providing the service at no cost until an agreement is reached. The figure thrown around hovered around a hundred and seventy six dollars per week per school, based on what private businesses pay for the same service.  But Lamb told News Five that the figure could be much less for the schools. With school opening next Wednesday, the meetings are expected to continue on Friday and next Monday to finalize a fee for the service.

  1. Elgin Martinez says:

Our Kids are not even entitle to a free education and now the dept of waste control want to charge them a fee to collect the Garbage at the school. What’s next are they going to be required to pay for the utilities?

  2. CEO says:

Schools should teach their students the song from Sesame Street: They need to compact it, compress it and make less of it!

    GOB start recycling!

  3. Self says:

Well Im sorry to say i disagree with Elgin Martinez, respone being, just like how the schools pay for electrcity & phone, why not pay for garbabe as well. The men picking up the garbage needs to be paid. So therefore Waste control should charge the schools. They can observe the cost to pay worker on there own. Common 19 years of grace period that the school hasnt paid. If the school doesnt pay for the picking up of their garbage that means they should pay for electricy nor phone either.
