City Boys make it to the championship round in Belize Bank Football League
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday. The stage was set yesterday for City Boys to take its destiny into its own hands as it hosted Hattieville F.C. yesterday at the M.C.C. in a bid to make it to the championship series. Knowing that they would have to get at least a point out this ballgame, City Boys get to a fast start when Raymond Gentle fire this corner kick into the danger zone at the eighth minute and Jack Dawson comes up with the conversion for the 1-zip lead. A few minutes later Shannon Flowers in defense for Hattieville today, makes this error going back to the goalkeeper that allows Dalton Cayetano to pounce but the push bounces off the near upright. Meanwhile, despite being out of the championship picture, Hattieville was not about to go down easy so Leon Jones bears traffic and fires this grass head burner that inches outside the sticks and at the half it’s still a 1-nil City Boys lead.
So we go to the second half and immediately Jason Young fires this bouncer that chips off the rear upright as William Johnson dodges a bullet. Jarret Davis, voted the best forward in the 2010 Super League, then fires this long distance spot kick that beats Charlie Slusher but travels outside the sticks. A few minutes later Dalton Cayetano forces the league’s best goalkeeper to make this stop. The rebound reaches Raymond Gentle who beat William Johnson only to fire a high riser when he should have scored. We’re at the seventy-eighth minutes when Raymond Gentle makes amends when he picks up this pass from Jason Young, eludes the keeper and fires into the far corner to give City Boys a 2-zip cushion. Jason Young then gets his turn to score off this feed from Diemery Pierre but Johnson comes up with a save he knows very little about. Meanwhile, for the second time in the ballgame Tyronne Mushcamp is taken down inside the eighteen, this time by Jarret Davis and referee Rommel Carballo rules penalty. Diemery Pierre and he beats Johnson early to make it a 3-zip City Boys lead. In the dying moments of this ballgame, Johnson fires this left foot bomb that bounces off the crossbar to Tyronne Muschamp who makes it a 4-zip big W for City Boys United and they’re off to the two game championship series inside the Belize Bank Super League.

“Oh yes, oh yes; guaranteed. This is my second year with the City Boys as head coach and I can guarantee this year the champ will be in belizze City Boys United.
In the other Super League match-up yesterday inside the Ricalde Stadium, Nizhee Corozal emerged as the other finalist by handing Placencia Assassin a 1-zip blast. Both City Boys and Nizhee finished with eleven points apiece but City Boys emerges the number one seed with a better goal differential as Hattieville and Placencia make their exit. Thus the championship series begins at the Ricalde Stadium this Sunday with Nizhee Corozal hosting City Boys United in game one.
Turning to the cycling scene, Medina’s House of Jewelry presented a day of races yesterday that covered all categories. Here is the finish in the elite class; Gregg Lovell on the outside gets up off his bike to extend his lead, grabbing first place and forcing Pope into second while Armedes Rivas rounds out the top three. At the junior level, it was Melvin Tillett with the W as Joel Borland and Bernard Trapp finished second and third respectively. Meanwhile, Barry Brown beat out Henry Morreira and Andrew Ordonez in that order to take the Weekend Warriors race. Shalini Zabaneh prevailed in the female ride over Alicia Thompson and Gina Lovell. While Fred Usher took the mountain bike class, forcing Smoky Gladden into second and Randy Dominguez into third.
In other cycling news, we want to congratulate the five man cycling team which competed in the forty-sixth Tour of Guatemala from Wednesday to Sunday Giovanni Choto finished third in the overall classification, minutes behind the leader while Allen Castillo emerged as the best sprinter with thirty-two points. We also want to thank the sponsors who made this trip possible.
In billiards news, the National Guinness 9 Ball Tournament was staged over the weekend at Belize Elementary and congratulations are in order to Advance Advertising who beat out Boti’s Rebels of Cayo for the title featuring Mike Estephan, Larry Lisbey, Manuel Ramos Angel Vargas, Glen Bico Hemmans, and Martin Bahadour who took home MVP honours. Advance took home three thousand dollars, twenty-five cases of Guinness and five hundred dollars from the National Sports Council, which looks like a pretty good hand from where I sit.
In basketball news, we head to the City Center for game two of the InterOffice Championship series between Tuff e Nuff and Atlantic Bank on Friday. We fast forward to the fourth quarter as Atlantic Bank, who are looking to force a decision game three are up by two. Darwin Elijio extends the bank’s lead with this nice left hand finish for two of his team high seventeen points. Tyrone Edwards replies with this banker for two of his game high twenty-one points. Elijio comes back with the big three from the left side. And here is the dagger from Andrew “Head” Staine that propels Atlantic Bank to the 70-62 big W to force a decisive game three which comes up this Wednesday night.
In other basketball news, here are the results of the Ladyville U-16 tournament, Milpa Snipers handled Japan Outlaw in a 58-45 final score while Ballers for Life shot down Lord’s Bank Bullets 66-62.
They’ve been to the World Cup, they’ve been a part of the Gold Cup and now this CONCACAF Giant, the National Football Team of Trinidad and Tobago comes to Belize for a test against out national team. It’s all set for September tenth at four p.m. inside the FIFA/FFB Field at capital city, Belmopan. Entrance fee is ten dollars and you won’t want to miss it.
