Calvary Temple gets new cafeteria

Story PictureIt’s a project that kicked off in June and continued throughout the summer break. And now the children of Calvary Temple Primary in Belize City are the enjoying the fruits of that labour. The spanking new cafeteria that was officially opened today is just part of the entire project that Lifeline Foundation embarked on a few months ago. It was a proud moment for both school and sponsor.

Kim Simpliss, Founder, Dir., Lifeline Foundation
“We had our fund-raiser, Black and White Gala and we raised funs for a feeding programme and that was our initial intent. However, when we came back to the school and we saw exactly where the cafeteria was, we decided this school needs a cafeteria because the cafeteria as you saw when you came the first time, it was in the middle of the school, classrooms and it was very hazardous to these kids and I really couldn’t live with that. I had to—we really had to get together and say we need this money and quite honestly, we started asking for sponsorship from cooperate companies like Benny’s, Arian Mitchell who did the plan for us, the contractor who did a lot of the work, practically at a reduced cost; a whole list of people. the total project cost like approximately thirty thousand dollars.”

Verna Jenkins, Acting Principal, Calvary Temple Primary
“Here at Calvary Temple you have children who cannot afford the money for their lunch. So in this way we’ll be able to help those students who can’t afford to buy a hot meal to have one.”

Marion Ali
“I understand too that before this structure was built that the students had to go into the downtown area and buy their meals, which wasn’t very safe for them.”

Verna Jenkins
“Yes, that was the older kids because the smaller kids, we would still collect their dollar and then send two of the older students to buy the food for them.”

Simpliss says Lifeline Foundation will also sponsor a feeding programme for the school for a year and during that time, will introduce a snack shop programme from which the school will raise funds to eventually take over the feeding programme. Lifeline is also planning to conduct other fundraising projects to help underprivileged children.
