Bus operators and Transport Department meet over service problems
There’s no end in sight for the nightmares that commuters face with public transportation. After mounting complaints, the Department of Transport met late last week with operators from the Western and Southern routes. The meeting covered a wide range of problems including over-crowding, un-kept schedules, speeding, refuelling with passengers onboard, and the general safety of passengers. But it’s not only the public that has complaints. Bus operators have their own laundry list. One of the main concerns is the closure of certain bus stops in Belmopan and along the major highways. Passengers travelling to Belize City along the Western Highway are also advised that soon the last stop once in the city will be the First Stop Taxi Stand at the entrance of Belize City, rather than at Roger’s Stadium. For commuters using the Northern route, your last stop will be at the entrance to the city on the approach to the San Cas Plaza.
Whenever government tries to fix something …….. THEY ALWAYS MAKE IT WORSE!!!! The last stop should be Pound Yard Bus terminal….. THAT IS THE “GRAND CENTRAL STATION” OF Belize City.
There will always be service problems in Belize because everything is political.Start looking out for the interest of the people GOB and stop focusing on filling your pockets.
The public transport system in Belize needs to keep improving. This is one area where I say that the Government has made significant strides since taking office. We cannot allow for it to regress to where it was before with Novelos! The department of transport and municipal authorities need to continue moving forward of fixing what are the problems, find new solutions to what does not work and present new innovative ideas on public transport efficiency, effectiveness and safety. I expect nothing less.
The first and last stop should be at the bus terminal. take for instance Benque Viejo, the residents have to walk all the way to the entrance of that town when taking the bus that is the 1st and last stop. on the other hand in san ignacio the bus makes a stop at every street corner, some are more privileged than others but it should be the same for all. The next issue of over crowding is the fact that there exists a bus company and a bus operator, in the first instance the bus drivers and conductors have a set daily pay but even that doesn’t stop the greedy conductors whereas in he latter the bus is owned by the driver and then he wants to make the most money that he could hence there will always be that problem. And the fact that transport personnel are corrupted if not check the tag team from cayo
