Macal River overflows, Iguana Creek Bridge under water
There are reports from western Belize that the Macal River continues to overflow. According to Chief Meteorologist, Ramon Frutos, over the past weekend Guatemala and Belize experienced extreme rainfall. Frutos told News Five that due to the run-offs from Guatemala, rivers including the old Belize River, the Macal River and the Mopan River are overflowing and that the excess waters from the Chalillo and Mollejon Dams have added to the problem. Frutos said that last Thursday, there were flash floods on the Macal and Mopan rivers that have contributed to the problem. These pictures courtesy of Eve’s Computer Services tell how high the Macal River rose on Saturday near the Iguana Creek Bridge conjoining the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena – a reported four feet. Today the water levels of the rivers in both Toledo and Cayo districts are still high and Frutos says that the receding process will be slow due to heavy rains over the past weekend. To make the situation grimmer, it is forecasted that there will be continuous rainfall throughout this week, which means that water levels will remain high. Commuters in the area are advised to exercise caution.
