No charges yet for man implicated in Mata Chica Resort death
On Monday night fifty-seven year old Gregorio Cornejo lost his life during a staff party at Mata Chica Resort on San Pedro Ambergris Caye. While on the pier of the luxury resort, Cornejo, was punched in his face by Oscar Barela, a guest at the party, who is a resident of Angel Street, San Pedro. When Cornejo received the blow, he fell into the sea and while being transported into town for medical assistance, he passed away. Officers at the San Pedro Police Formation were awaiting a directive from the Director of Public Prosecutions to apply either the charge of murder or manslaughter on Barela. As it turns out, Barela has now been released because the maximum time to be held in custody without a charge had elapsed. That’s right, the man who landed the fateful blow is a free man, at least temporarily. Even though Barela’s constitutional rights remain intact, sources say that he will more than likely face manslaughter charges, since Cornejo’s autopsy results show that he died from drowning.
We’ll wait & see.
Just keep in mind that you count on the tourist dollars, one of your guides drowned last month, one Police Officer was murdered by another earlier this year, you found two decomposed bodies in a shallow grave, you had residents hallucinating about a plane crash the Coast Guard & Police claimed didn’t happen & now you have a man drown in front of his co-workers, none of whom knew how to perform CPR or resuscitate a drowning victim at a place that caters to tourists who come there for water sports. Just for good measure I’ll remind you of the rape of one tourist earlier this year if I remember correctly.
Think about it before you decide that because this young man’s relative owns the resort, he gets a pass on this murder. If he is not punished, he has no reason to control his temper & God have mercy on the next person who crosses him. Tourists, beware!

he punch the man, soo he contributed to his death, he deserve some kind of punishment,
what they waiting for!!! If Oscar Barela would’nt have punch him he would’nt have fell in the water,
common mein, I say charge that man, lock him up, lash him 100 times with tambran whip, so he learn to repect older people, this is what I macal DPP says, done.
