Kareem Smith appears in court for unlicensed firearm
You previously heard of him following the May eighteenth Grenade explosion and today twenty-two year old Kareem Smith, a fisherman of Junesville, Belize City, was back in court. Smith has been behind bars facing charges of conspiracy in connection with the grenade that exploded, killed one and injured eleven persons on Mayflower Street. And when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court today he was found guilty and fined ten thousand dollars for keeping a Walter brand point three-eighty pistol without a gun license. Magistrate Roberto Ordonez gave Smith until November thirtieth to pay the fine and if he defaults on payment he will serve two years, but since Smith is currently on remand for the grenade incident, he isn’t going anywhere in a hurry. The incident occurred around nine p.m. on March tenth prior to the grenade incident. The police were on mobile patrol when they received information of a shooting incident and were given general descriptions of the persons involved. While the mobile was at the corner Vernon and Partridge Street they saw two men riding bicycles on Vernon Street who fit the description of the suspects. The police pursued them and caught one of them when he fell from his bicycle at the corner of Tulip and Flamboyant streets. The gun was retrieved about four feet away from Smith. The second suspect managed to escape and he was never arrested. Smith did not call any witness and he did not testify.
