Multi-Million dollar drug cache goes up in smoke
The Customs Department has moved swiftly with the destruction of a multi-million dollar cache of illegal drugs it confiscated at the Port compound this past Wednesday. The customs and police bust unearthed two containers, each carrying forty boxes containing approximately twenty million pills and another container with eight hundred and fifty-five boxes of fake Marlboro cigarettes. While the cigarettes were valued at four million dollars, Colin Griffith, Collector for Customs puts the value of each pill in a range of two to four dollars. Using this as an estimation, the pills have a value of forty to eighty million dollars. And to ensure that the pills do not end up in the wrong hands, the police sought permission from the courts to destroy the drugs. Various arms of the police department along with members of the Customs Department, a magistrate, a Justice of the Peace, and the B.D.F. are in the process of destroying the drugs tonight at an undisclosed location in the Cayo district. They started the process at about twelve-thirty p.m. and expect to finish by eight tonight.
