Highway accident proves fatal for one person

A man is detained pending charges following a fatal traffic accident in the Corozal District on Monday.  The incident happened after eleven o’clock between miles seventy-nine and eighty near Calcutta Village and claimed the life of forty one year old Elvis Clarke, a resident of that village.  Clarke, who was riding a bicycle, was discovered lying face up with severe head injuries.  According to customs officer, Armando Garcia, he was driving his GMC Arcadia SUV from Corozal towards Orange Walk when the incident happened.  Police have detained Garcia pending directives from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.  That is because the deceased was riding his bicycle contrary to the flow of traffic on the highway.

So what if he is riding contrary to traffic? does this mean that the driver should not be be careful? what is wrong these days? Police don’t have the where with all to know that careless conduct and negligence does means just that? All drivers should know that when you driving through a populated area you must slow down and be aware that pedestrians cyclist and motorist are likely to be around. It is for a court to determine if the driver’s conduct fell below the standard, not the DPP – to do otherwise is to deny the victim and his family the right to have their matter brought before a judicial tribunal. this sounds ridiculous – if the players were different I am sure the driver would have already been arrested and charged – we do not apply the law equally in Belize.

  2. Driver says:

That’s why you don’t ride upstap!

  3. Proud says:

Sounds like customs man no ah get charged. People should learn to ride on the right side of the road. Sad still….RIP Clarke

  4. Ben says:

Well we the public don’t have to get surprise. Since he is a custom officer then nothing will be done to him. In Belize the rich get richer the poor get poorer. The justice system is the same statndard. You know important people one could get off from any crime no matter how obvious the incident can be. It is ashame we are living in a country like this.

THe police should charge him for his acts, its up 2 the jury 2 decide if he is guilty or not. Personally i think that this person is being treated above the law. Drivers, should lower their speed on populated areas.i think its 25 mph. By the way did he submitted himself 2 alcohol test. Or those crocks on payroll protecting another crimminal on payroll.charge these inbecile and let a jury of his peers decide if he is guilty or not.the dpp needs 2abstain himself from deciding who should b charged.

Well we cannot blame the driver for the accident. The gov is to blame Why? They are gov they put laws in place. here in the U.S if do not slow down for a bicycle rider and do run over that person you well charge with manslaughter and reckless driving.

  7. Earl Grey says:

    RIDING…….UP-STOP is good!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They should have both seen each other and the bike could have gotten out the way………………… since drivers don’t always see riders.
