James Adderley has weekend sports
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.
The rains couldn’t stop the nation from celebrating its twenty-seventh birthday over the weekend. However, on Saturday its effects became very apparent to Brilliant of Crooked Tree and Surprise of Lemonal whose representatives gather around the umpire for a decision on whether game two of their semi-final series in Belize Rural Cricket Competition would take place as planned today. Our look at the pitch exposes the unhealthy conditions that have been brought on by the rains. So we weren’t surprised when the umpired expressed this sentiment.
Cricket Umpire
“I am not satisfied with that and as far as I’m concerned, I’ve told you and I keep repeating. I am going to umpire a pitch—let me put it in plain words—with that that’s affecting bowler.”
And so game two of this series is now re-scheduled for this Saturday at Crooked Tree. Brilliant leads 1-zip going in. The other three game semi final series featuring excellence of Double Head Cabbage and Wicked Eleven of Flowers Bank is set to kick off game one Saturday also but at Double Head Cabbage.
In the meantime folks, we visited championship night, Friday night inside the Belmopan Volleyball Association at Capital City where Lady Hummingbird and Doves are battling for the female title. We’re in game one when Jasmine Anderson comes up with the smash that Jennifer Mangar can’t dig out to tie the score at four apiece. It’s Lady Hummingbird in full control when Shimain Rosado fails to execute the smash. And when Anderson comes back with this change of pace and change of direction, Lady Hummingbird takes game one 25-12. Behind the serve of Andrea Peters, Dove runoff five straight points to start off game two. Tonight Lady Hummingbird is not about to budge and when they come up wit this point we have a 7-7 tie in game two. Doves would retake the lead but Melissa Tatum ties it at a twenty apiece with this nice power serve. This time we’re tied twenty-four apiece when Shimain Rosado smashes at Trecia Miguel. At twenty-five each Anderson’s smash controlled by the Doves but Rosado’s offering gives up the point. This is how Lady Hummingbird takes game two, Nesha Williams’ serve is misplayed and it’s a 27-25 score. Lady Hummingbird would take game three 25-22 and with that the Female Open Titles of Belmopan. Capital city and we say congratulations.
Now to the male finals as Gladiators take on Special Effect and the first point of the match comes from the first serve from Karim Coleman as Milton Hoare simply misjudges his response. It’s a tied ballgame when defensively Special Effects displays way too much youthful exuberance as Gladiators take a 5-4 lead. Derek Morgan then gets to express his power as this smash gives his team the point. Derek Young’s defensive work is then rewarded as he then gets set properly to crush the Effects with this smash. The Gladiators then let Jarwine Audinett come in and do the popcorn and he delivers. Gladiators take game one 25-15. In game two the Gladiators get off to a fast start as Audinett delivers again. And Mr. Morgan, aren’t you afraid you hurt somebody? Nevertheless, Special Effects comes back first with good defense and then with beautiful anticipation by Tariq Campbell. Right here we have an interesting rally until Jay Chavarria raises up with power and they now have a 14-10 lead people when Gladiators over play their power game. But they come back, Derek Morgan gets set, gets point. Morgan then shows off his experience with this nice touch that Special Effects can’t handle. This defensive block by Derek Young ties the ballgame at twenty points apiece. And then Young wins game two for the Gladiators 25-23 with this killer smash. They would go one to take game three 25-19 and capture the title. We say congratulations to one and all, good show to the volleyball community inside Belmopan.
