Woodcarver and Shooting Victim, Edwin Henry needs your help

edwin henry

With the spate of shootings in the city, when news of gunfire at a pawnshop rang out—initial reaction was—there must have been a robbery attempt. Investigations later revealed, however, a completely different story. A Caye Caulker resident had been injured and a security guard was detained.  Delahnie Bain has an update.

Delahnie Bain, Reporting

On September seventh, Edwin Henry, a woodcarver from Caye Caulker, came to the City to do business at the Fair Brothers Pawn Shop at the corner of Central American Boulevard and Mahogany Street. Henry was a regular customer at the pawn shop, but that morning, things didn’t work out the way he expected.

Edwin Henry, Shooting Victim

“I was rushing and I went inside. The security told me to come outside. So big man told me he’s turning up his computer system so just give me a little second and he will deal with me. So now upon that, I turn my back to come outside and by the time I turn my back and I come outside the security just haul a gun and shot me direct to my face for absolutely no reason. I never did have a problem with them. From they were opening business, from Bel China Bridge I do operate time to time business with these people yoh know.”

Henry was shot at around eight-thirty a.m. and by midday he was on life support. Ten days later, he is now on the road to recovery but his life has changed significantly.

Edwin Henry

“My whole left hand side, that I use the most is paralyzed, very number, a lot of pains. The bullet went through my jaw right here and it break up my jaw a little bit and I really need to go outside and do some surgeries and stuff. It’s only my mom mostly at home. I think I could stand a little bit. Maybe I stand for a little three, four seconds but immediately I divert on the left hand side and I fall again and have to holla fi moms or sis or someone who is around.”

Because he is left handed and his entire left side is paralyzed, Henry is unable to earn his living. So he is asking the public for assistance to cover the expenses of traveling abroad for treatment.

Edwin Henry

“I do need to do major surgeries right now especially within my jaw and my whole left part of my body, which is numb.”

Delahnie Bain

“How much money do you need to raise now?”

Edwin Henry

“Well approximately I need about twenty, twenty-five thousand dollars right now because I really need to reach in the Us or Merida and I need to take some family support with me so I would really ask the public to please assist me in whichever way that they could assist me. The company of the Fair Brothers, they have paid for a CAT-scan for me. They were the ones who took me to the hospital on time because I think by waiting there for the police to arrive, I think I would be a dead man up to todeh day to be honest.”

If you wish to assist Henry, you can make a deposit to Atlantic Bank account number 211-131-764

The security guard who shot Henry was identified as Elroy Hemmans, but according to police, he has not yet been charged. Hemmans has claimed that he fired his weapon because Henry attacked him with a knife when he was instructed to go outside.

It would seems to me that the pawn shop that he was doing business with that hired this security guard that shot him should be responsible to at least pay for his surgeries or whatever medical treatment he needs and this is not withstanding the insurance and lawsuit and anything else that should be available to him that he may recover from his injuries and compensate him for the destruction of his livelihood, seems that lawyers should be knocking down his door to represent him in this situation or I guess Belize is really only for the haves and damn the have not’s.

  2. Islander says:

For starters Edwin Henry is not from Caye Caulker. He does sell weed to the tourists in Caye Caulker yes but he is not from here.

  3. ronzy says:

the police needed to check the knife and see who’s fingerprint was on it . If they didn’t do that and use the knife as evidence, they are dumb and cant use a simple thing like that which has been out before technology nearly or more than a hundred years ago. Also the cameras and where he was shot would prove if he was a threat to the guard. Ashot to the face was unnecessary too.

  4. MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST says:

What was revealed on the camera for god sake?

  5. Anti-racism in Belize says:

    Islander:
Irrespective of where this man call his residence, he is first and foremost a Belizean. As far I as know there is no where in Belize where this person could not call his home if so desires. You both have the right to live in Caye Caulker, as it is the land of his birth just like you. Assuming you were born here.

How racist are you? Is it because he’s BLACK, he can’t be from Caye Caulker? I wish you people would stop your territorial crap. If you saw him engaging in such illegal activity, it is your duty as a law abiding citizen of Belize to have reported him to the police. If you didn’t then you were condoning this act. This story has nothing to do with your allegations.

Besides how do you think your statement contributed to his plight today?

Happy Independence day Belizeans (Black, White, Yellow and Blue, Alla weh dah one)!

  6. Con says:

If he was attacking the guard, then he should fund his own expense. So now criminal expect the already streched Belizeans to clean up their folly? Check the knife and the security camera and publish the results.

  7. louisville, ky says:

For some reason, Islander, you seem to come across as a bigot when it comes to people of color. Are you ???

  8. Elgin Martinez says:

Islander:Whether Henry is from Caye Caulker is irrelevant to what happen to him.Let’s put things in perspective here.

  9. Edith says:

It’s sad that after reading the whole story the only comment islander vfan add is that the man isn’t from caye caulker. Iteeds to b investigated n told who was in the wrong n if the Guy attacked they security then he’s wrong, but if he didn’t then the security guard wrong. Either way, he needs surgery n he needs help. Look past the racist sh*t noh man…

  10. MADDYVANDIJK/LAWENORDER says:

Why did the news station with held the most important info here?

We would like to know who attacked who first, and why this man was shot and almost died.
I do not want to continue condoning criminal behaviour if this was the case here, and if this was the case then I strongly urged this person to get a ……… job, that simple.

At some deeper level in our lives, how we do things is just as important as what we do.

  11. islander says:

Funny how some people are quick to pull the race card.

I GUESS THE GUARD SHOT HIM CAUSE HE WAS BLACK RIGHT?

My comment was with regards to the news always saying that this criminals are from the caye’s when they are not from here. IN THE SAME MANNER THOSE FIVE SPANISH MEN THAT ROBBED THE BANK IN ORANGE WALK WHO CLAIMED THEY WERE FROM CAYE CAULKER…. When they were from elsewhere.
