Attorney called to the Bar

christelle wilson

Her name has been called countless times as the prosecutor in court cases, but today twenty-nine year old Christelle Wilson became the newest member of the Belize Bar Association. Wilson was called to the Bar at a special session in the courtroom of Chief Justice Abdulai Conteh this morning. The CJ congratulated the new attorney and advised that in her profession, she has a serious responsibility as an officer of court. A motion by Martin Marshalleck in his application allowed Wilson to be called to the Bar today.  The motion was sealed by affidavits given in writing by senior attorneys including Richard “Dickie” Bradley and Oswald Twist, who both spoke highly of Wilson. As for her qualifications, after attending Pallotti High School and Saint John’s College Junior College, Wilson earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English Arts and a Paralegal Certificate at the University of Belize.  She furthered her studies at the University of the West Indies where she attained a Bachelors of Law in 2007 and then in 2009 Wilson got her Legal Education Certificate from the Normal Manley Law School.

  5. BZNinCALI says:

    Congratulations!

I am very myopic & Mr. Castellanos’ weed was confiscated before he got to me. Does this mean that she will not be allowed to prosecute cases in which the defense attorneys are Dickie Bradley & Oswald Twist? We do not want any conflict of interest or the appearance of it.

  6. MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST/DEPUNISHER says:

I am proud to have more strong women in the force Like Wilson, this should be considered positive step forward for the “Women movement” in Belize.

God forbid if Wilson is related to any present or former corrupt leaders, or authorities, her job will not be an easy one.

When Wilson brings her best to the bar that will be enough for me.

  7. G. lopez says:

Belize already has too many Lawyers. We need more professionals in the Medical, Engineeiring and Scientific fields.Lawyers are leeches draining the economy and contribute nothing to attaining Law and order in the country.

  8. P'off Belizean says:

Jesse at first when I read your comment I was going to react to you but you make a very valid point my love. This is not to take away from Christelle’s accomplishments. Well done darling, a black woman with brain is sexy and something to celebrate.

However, we must start looking within the country and look for the skill shortages. We need to give scholarships for archeology, ecology, marine biology, environmental studies, BS/MS education/teaching, psychologists, dentists, doctors, nurses, social workers, criminologists, physical therapists, public health specialists, hospital administrators, mid-wives etc. We will eventually have lawyers who are unemployed because there are too many. In the meantime whilst crime is high every one of them will be busy but not sustainable.

A healthy nation is a productive nation, because you make opportunities happen. Even if you bake at home and sell your stuff to offices etc

Again not to take away Christelle’s glory because your hard work should be praised, and best wishes in your career.

  9. Stephen says:

Great to see another SISTER step up and I am looking forward to see some more as we need to support our LADIES. Some of the men are trying to get there so when they are trying help them as to say Mr. Chester Williams. Great to know that you have uplift yourself so it is time to put politics aside and get our people educate. I believe that the POLICE Department owed him a scholarship.

  10. chabelli says:

well more lawyers/attorneys =more crime;non productive sector nothing to celebrate here too many in the world

  11. CEO says:

all of you who are saying too many attorneys just work to reduce the crime rate and then we really will not need as many attorneys in the world.

By the way all you critics since you know what the country needs then why don’t you guys go and study and become the engineers and scientists?

  12. P'off Belizean says:

    CEO:

How dare you? How very dare you? You’re making some very broad assumptions my friend. Some Belizeans have attained MSc, Doctorates and Post doctorate level degrees at some prestigious Russell Group/Ivy league universities. I know of other Belizeans with Doctorate degree also. However, it is fortunate that our homeland could not possibly foster an environment to facilitate the development of my careers.

Therefore speaking as someone with some insight of the work force of my host country, I thought I would make some suggestions. However I do forgot that some Belizeans don’t really appreciate such things. Scientists? What kind of scientists? May I remind you that environmental studies, marine biology, ecology criminology, Botany and medicine are all scientific degrees, or a significant proportion scientific components to the degree program. In a digital world we should also be focusing on Information technology but according you we can continue to educate lawyers, I suppose if all else fails they can become politicians. It’s about status rather than developing the skills of workforce.

  13. Earl Grey says:

Lawyers are despised throughout…………. BUT WE ALL NEED ONE…… SOONER OR LATER!!!!!!!!

  14. P'off Belizean says:

100% correct BZNinCALI and this is what hinder progress in Belize. There are many highly educated Belizeans outside the country. It is not about the low pay, its not about the attitude the people you can possibly impart your skills, its about those people in authority who feel threatened by your achievements.

There are Belizeans working in specialist fields such as IT UK/US, oil consultancy in Knightsbridge, consultant gynaecologist in UK, specialist nurses in US/UK, MSc graduate teachers in UK, Economist, and many post graduate professionals outside Belize who long to come home and build our own country.

The exposure you gain abroad, you realise that our country has to change drastically for this to happen. One person alone won’t make a blind bit of different, you’d probably be killed for suggesting change. Each day I look around my environment I watch with envy for what could possibly occur in Belize.

Another thing which is not right is the number of times I’ve seen advertises for teachers to Belize from abroad. My curiosity means I’d ask about their program about teaching in Belize, and they would describe to me Belize is a very poor country and education system is under-develop etc, inside I feel angry and sadness at the same time. Why our leaders don’t get their act together and attract our own people with expertise knowledge of the country, the people and a genuine love of the country. Instead we keep looking outside for so call expertise in a certain area when we possibly already have a Belizean qualified to work in the field.

I don’t know how it works but all these scholarships being offered, do they have an obligation to come back to the country to work? The other issue relates to the job available upon their return to the country. Therefore unless you do study Law, medicine, nursing, teaching there is no guarantee of a job in the field. Is that correct? Someone suggested science subjects, however since scientists work in the laboratories it would be pretty frustrating to do so in Belize.

  15. Steve says:

Hey Congratulations on a great accomplishment.
