Minors/cousins draw first blood with a knife

An old beef between two teenaged cousins of Camalote Village, Cayo, has resulted in one being stabbed and the other being charged.  The incident occurred just minutes after classes were over for Saint Jude’s Roman Catholic Primary in the same village. Reports are that on Wednesday the victim, a fourteen year old student, was standing in front of the school when his sixteen year old cousin walked up to him and stabbed him in the left side of the abdomen and hand.  While his family is saying that the crime was committed for no reason, the family of the accused is saying something entirely different.  They claim it was out of provocation.  The youths whose names have been withheld because they are minors, are being questioned by police.  So far, the sixteen year old has been charged with grievous harm.

This is horrendous. Belizeans parents are much to blame for the actions of their children. When once upon a time your parents would drag you around and introduce you to family even distant cousins in the remote villages. The objectives of these visits were that you firstly acknowledge that you are related therefore you respect each other in the streets, and secondly, you don’t meet up and bring a female relative home as your girlfriend. The saying blood thicker than water was commonplace; nowadays we seem to be so selfish that we only concentrate on our household. To have one parent suggesting that the child was stabbed based on provocation is absurd. He needs to know in life not everyone will ever agree with everything you say and do. We learn to respect our different point of views. However when we have our leaders (i.e. doctors and politicians) who choose to settle their disagreements in the streets or across the media then who can blame the way our minors choose to settle their disputes.

I’d also like to see a lowering of the age at which someone is considered a minor in criminal activities. I think we underestimate the level of comprehension of the 16 year old. In my opinion they are fully able to understand that pointing a gun and pulling the trigger or taking a knife and jabbing it into a person’s abdomen may result in murder. If I was the victim’s parents, I would press charges relative or not, and perhaps the parent of the 16 year old may want to consider anger management for him. As maybe next time it will be them since he doesn’t seem to respect life.

These two kids are not acting like minors as a result why should their names be withheld? What a shame two cousins condoning stupidity. What wouldn’t these people do to someone who is not related to them?

There goes some family defending this child for a crime which was certainly not necessary, if this child was provoked in any manner especially on a school ground the rightful thing would be to report the matter and let the school handle it not to stab the other child with a knife. I would say that this child have some serious issues that needs to be addressed before it’s too late and apparently his family have issues also. And the senseless crimes continue in Belize.

I just do not know what to say anymore. You get so stress out about all these crimes. The police department need more training, they need to know how gather information, protect the crime scene, and have better understanding about their surrounding like the media. I am not saying that they will have no part. They too need to know what information will be broadcast.
