Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

Team Belize dismounts the tour bus that took them to the Estadio Municipal Julian Tesecum at San Jose Petén, Guatemala on Saturday for its big international friendly against the Guatemala national football team under heavy scrutiny by the media and fans. As our team takes the pitch in the opening ceremonies, they are well aware that they are in a strange land and secondly they have never tasted victory against this country that nurses a claim to our homeland ever before. And yes folks our national item did take place in the niceties that preceded the match. Very quickly the home side test Woodrow West in goal since Shane Orio didn’t make the trip as Marvin Avila centers dangerously into the goal mouth but West manages. With some ten minutes in when Trevor Lennon allows Mario Castellanos to push this ball over the head of a pole in the position west and Guatemala takes the early 1-zip lead.

A few minutes later, Elroy Smith quiets the Guatemalan fans somewhat with this potent right foot off the said piece that forces Christian Alvarez into a big time save. Around the 33^rd minute, Elroy Smith finds Harrison ‘Kafu’ Roches and his header forces Alvarez to conceive the equalizer for Belize. And the Belizean supporters at Petén gets charged up by the 1-1 score going into intermission.

Things get a bit ugly as soon as the action resumed as some unsavory character hurls this missile at Woodrow West. The hit forces the keeper to the ground but he would continue. On their first possession after things came down, the Guats go to Carlos Coserillo whose right foot at the far corner is mishandled by West. Lester Ruiz lets him pay as he pushes the score to a 2-1 showing. However, Belize comes right back off this said piece that Victor Morales rolls to Elroy smith who finds Elroy Kuylen and just like that it’s a 2-2 ballgame. Folks we can’t really say what Ian Gaynair does to deserve this red card especially during this kick off, but the referee determines that Belize should be condemned to a numerical disadvantage in this international friendly. To make matters even more interesting. A massive display of fireworks follows the expulsion. In the meantime, Woodrow West does well against this shot from inside the box by Lester Ruiz, to keep the match tied at 2 a piece. The Guats take a 3-2 lead when Carlos Caserillo picks out Dwight Peserosi and his header beats West to give his home team its third lead ah di match. Three minutes later, Dalton lee clears this ball but only as far as Carlos Figueroa who makes it a 4-2 score for Guatemala. ‘Kafu’ then gets this look at goal but the effort to pull one back is thwarted by the substitute goalkeeper, Jaime Cardoval. Guatemala goes on to post the 4-2 big W.

If Guatemala didn’t win it would have been very, very good for us. I think we held out with ten men. We played a new brand of football that people here haven’t seen. And we have been congratulated everywhere I walk—you’ve played good, you played well and you can only go up if you continue like this.”

I feel real bad because the whole game change and all the pressure come right pan fi we side. So I think that I really hurt the team when I get that red card.”

In other football news, BPFL play over the weekend. FC Belize beat San Felipe Barcelona 3-1. Belmopan Blaze bounce San Pedro Seadogs 3-zip and Belize Defence Force edge Toledo Ambassadors 4-3 while Hankook Verdes and Griga United battled to a scoreless stalemate.

Checking the table tennis scene in the 2010 Table Tennis Team League. Over the weekend, Bombers shoot down Raqueteers 5-2 while in the other first division match Suga City edge Rivero’s Welders 5-4. In second division action, Young Stars blew away Hurricane 5-2. Assassin took out Team “L” 5-1. And Garage roll over Cobra by that same score. This Saturday finds 6 second division teams in action—Hurricane faces garage, Young Stars take on Team “L” and Cobra goes to work against Pheonix.

Turning to the Cycling Scene, it was a field spring that saw Austin Armstrong of Clear the Land grab the 40 mile junior race in yesterday’s O.W.’s bypass criterium beating out Daniel Choto, Dijon Spence, Oscar Quiros Joel Bowman in that order. In the masters class, Big Mike Lewis, riding unattached edged out Roque Matus for top honors, forcing Barney Brown into third, Omar Gomez fourth and Henry Moreira fifth in a race that saw 30 start and 26 finish. Meanwhile the finish to the elite class featured four under 23 riders making a bid, but it is David Henderson of Indeco with the ‘W’ as  Donicedi Vasquez, peter Choto and Giovanni Choto take this next three spots in that order. Barney Brown then beat the field to round out the top five. The next big event on the calendar is the Sagitun Banana Classic set for November 7^th, at Independence.

In news from the 19^th Commonwealth Games, Belize best finish in the 12 lap 168km ride came from Greg Lovell who finished 26^th. Edgar Arana also completed the course, but at the 46 position. 133 athletes from 33 countries participated with Allan Davis of Australia winning the gold. It’s the first time Belizean cyclist have completed this even in the Commonwealth Games.

Finally folks, boxing returns to Belize in a presentation at the Belize Biltmore Plaza that matches our fighters against our Mexican Counterparts this Friday October 15^th at 6p.m. tickets are on sale at the National Sports Council and the fight will be aired on Channel 5 right after Friday’s news package and will be streamed on the internet making it available for one and all so enjoy wherever you are.
