James Adderley weekly sports round up scores goal
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.
Team Belize dismounts the tour bus that took them to the Estadio Municipal Julian Tesecum at San Jose Petén, Guatemala on Saturday for its big international friendly against the Guatemala national football team under heavy scrutiny by the media and fans. As our team takes the pitch in the opening ceremonies, they are well aware that they are in a strange land and secondly they have never tasted victory against this country that nurses a claim to our homeland ever before. And yes folks our national item did take place in the niceties that preceded the match. Very quickly the home side test Woodrow West in goal since Shane Orio didn’t make the trip as Marvin Avila centers dangerously into the goal mouth but West manages. With some ten minutes in when Trevor Lennon allows Mario Castellanos to push this ball over the head of a pole in the position west and Guatemala takes the early 1-zip lead.
A few minutes later, Elroy Smith quiets the Guatemalan fans somewhat with this potent right foot off the said piece that forces Christian Alvarez into a big time save. Around the 33rd minute, Elroy Smith finds Harrison ‘Kafu’ Roches and his header forces Alvarez to conceive the equalizer for Belize. And the Belizean supporters at Petén gets charged up by the 1-1 score going into intermission.
Things get a bit ugly as soon as the action resumed as some unsavory character hurls this missile at Woodrow West. The hit forces the keeper to the ground but he would continue. On their first possession after things came down, the Guats go to Carlos Coserillo whose right foot at the far corner is mishandled by West. Lester Ruiz lets him pay as he pushes the score to a 2-1 showing. However, Belize comes right back off this said piece that Victor Morales rolls to Elroy smith who finds Elroy Kuylen and just like that it’s a 2-2 ballgame. Folks we can’t really say what Ian Gaynair does to deserve this red card especially during this kick off, but the referee determines that Belize should be condemned to a numerical disadvantage in this international friendly. To make matters even more interesting. A massive display of fireworks follows the expulsion. In the meantime, Woodrow West does well against this shot from inside the box by Lester Ruiz, to keep the match tied at 2 a piece. The Guats take a 3-2 lead when Carlos Caserillo picks out Dwight Peserosi and his header beats West to give his home team its third lead ah di match. Three minutes later, Dalton lee clears this ball but only as far as Carlos Figueroa who makes it a 4-2 score for Guatemala. ‘Kafu’ then gets this look at goal but the effort to pull one back is thwarted by the substitute goalkeeper, Jaime Cardoval. Guatemala goes on to post the 4-2 big W.
Bertie Chimilio, President, FFB
“I think we played an excellent game. With ten men, two goals, shows that it should have happened that way and that’s how it happened. If Guatemala didn’t win it would have been very, very good for us. I think we held out with ten men. We played a new brand of football that people here haven’t seen. And we have been congratulated everywhere I walk—you’ve played good, you played well and you can only go up if you continue like this.”
Ian Gaynair, Belize National Team
“Dah celebrate we mi di celebrate. I neva know that dah mi wah yellow card fi di way how we celebrate. All I do dah put my hand behind my ears and run down going back to by my side and I get wah next yellow card fi that. I noh think I deserve that. I feel real bad because the whole game change and all the pressure come right pan fi we side. So I think that I really hurt the team when I get that red card.”
Harrison “Kafu” Roches, Belize National Team
“That dah the game, you know. We have to thank god once again for this opportunity out here once again for this shirt with all our hearts and mind we go out there and do it. We come out losing but the fight was good can’t complain.”
Elroy Kuylen, Belize National Team
“We practice dehn play deh—dehn dah the set piece. We surprised the team. Everybody haul dah back post and the ball get played ina di space and dah so di goal come.”
And we certainly wanna say thanks to Alex Palacio for conducting our interviews.
In other football news, BPFL play over the weekend. FC Belize beat San Felipe Barcelona 3-1. Belmopan Blaze bounce San Pedro Seadogs 3-zip and Belize Defence Force edge Toledo Ambassadors 4-3 while Hankook Verdes and Griga United battled to a scoreless stalemate.

In the masters class, Big Mike Lewis, riding unattached edged out Roque Matus for top honors, forcing Barney Brown into third, Omar Gomez fourth and Henry Moreira fifth in a race that saw 30 start and 26 finish. Meanwhile the finish to the elite class featured four under 23 riders making a bid, but it is David Henderson of Indeco with the ‘W’ as Donicedi Vasquez, peter Choto and Giovanni Choto take this next three spots in that order. Barney Brown then beat the field to round out the top five. The next big event on the calendar is the Sagitun Banana Classic set for November 7th, at Independence.

Hey folks, that’s the show for today. We invite you back same time same place next week.
Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
You know what….. I am sick and tired of our footfall team getting shelled in international matches, that ends up being mismatches. Then Bertie Chimilio, without any shame, talking all this hog wash about all the congratulations he recieved about some new style of play…….. after taking 4.
But what can i say, except that the selfish despotic management of football affairs are so typical of the way just about everything else is run in the country. Ah seh, man fu Bertie Chimilio……..
I am still very proud of our National Team…Win, loose, or draw. Those guys get out there and play despite their situation, they are always at a disadvantage where they get called in a week or two before big matches…come on mein..those other teams workout months. Our players still play out their hearts knowing they are NOT prepared and NOT treated right. Like the person above mentioned..Mis-management is the problem!!!
Don’t get me wrong, I am very proud of our boys too. I have personally studied the football career of players like Kafu and and Elroy ‘Bib’ Kuylen. Been watching these youth play ball from the tender age of 9 and 10yrs old. These two, along with the Tasher boys, Kareem Haylock and others playing semi pro all passed thru the hands of 100 meter Barcelona Olympian Emory Paul Gill, better known as ‘Gilla’. Chimilio need to stop sending our athletes to the slaughter and give our boys the training they deserve to be able to compete internationally.
All Iam saying is that rather than using the FIFA resources to improve the sport, the money is going the same route, Just like captm’ foot money………
Any team in Central America will beat our National Team, they are paid professionals with continuous professional trainers. The margin of losses are getting smaller, we have more players playing abroad & we could have more going abroad if the players really wanted to grow in the sport. The red card really hurt us, “discipline “, we are doing better. Football players, keep your criminal record clean, keep training . Bertie Chimilio keep doing what you are doing.
I am really proud been a Belizian and very proud seen my brother woodrow west performing and helping our very own belizian team. I believe in him in God and in Belize best wishes to all players of Belize; without talent in our country there would have never be success and intertainment in our country
