A new series of texts books is making its way into stores and after evaluation; it may be heading to the classrooms. “It’s a series that is intended to provide primary children with social skills, with the skill to be able to interact well with others within the Belizean society. It looks at integrating the primary curriculum along with Social Studies. The series is one that embraces our current issues in Belize, factors that affect us and also providing the child with the skill to overcome challenges as well. So it’s looking at the person, society, culture, the environment.”

According to Deputy Chief Education Officer, Carol Babb, the series has all the ingredients of a successful educational tool.

“It is linked to the curriculum, it has a teacher’s guide, it is very student friendly, teacher friendly; user friendly, I think it’s a good book. But then that is my personal opinion. Before it is included on the national text book program it has to go through an evaluation process. So after that evaluation process then the committee will determine whether it’s a book suitable to be included in our text books list. But I know that the first two series are already included and teachers find that they are very, very good books.”

“A lot of work has gone into it because it must  be reader friendly, it must be attractive, it must grasp the attention of the learner otherwise children may not want to interact with the material as we he hope they would.”

The editor, Priscilla Brown Lopez, says Living Together is the first set of Social Studies Books tailored specially for the Belizean students.

Priscilla Brown-Lopez

“Before this text there were no Social Studies book that were intended or developed for Belizean children so for them to understand their environment, to understand their communities, to know that they need to care for others and where they live; I’m certain that that will create changes. The whole importance of living together with others, we’ve tried to bring across the text. We’re hoping that if children are introduced to these concepts very early, they will be able to change the ways of thinking and be able to integrate better into society.”

Carol Babb

“Now more than ever, in this time and this day and age where there is so much violence, the theme is indeed very appropriate. We need to teach our students, we need to set good examples that it is important for us to live together, to work together and to build Belize.”

The launched was followed by a panel discussion and workshop for lower division teachers. Delahnie Bain for News Five.
