Sunrise Rotary Club sponsors literacy campaign
The Port Loyola Library in Belize City has been singled out to benefit from a literacy campaign by Rotary Club Belize Sunrise, an arm of the Rotary Club, which hopes to raise a total of two hundred thousand dollars. The monies will be used to construct fencing and an upper flat and to purchase computers. Ten lucky winners were drawn at an early morning raffle at the Radisson as part of the campaign and other initiatives are planned in November.

Located in an area prone to violence, the library is in need of security measures for students that frequent the library as a resource center. Lawrence Vernon of the National Library Service told News Five that he is privileged to benefit from the donation.
Lawrence Vernon, Principal Librarian, Belize Nat’l Library Service
“The library board is quite pleased with the assistance that we are getting from the Sunrise Rotary Club and this is a much needed assistance. This will facilitate us quite a lot because recently we have been having, I would say, unwanted people coming into the yard and endangering the students, the children who come here to some extent. We have had people coming at the doors and fighting and things like that and there have been incidents of gun fire in the area.”
Port Loyola’s Library needs are in tune with the Club’s mission and today’s fundraiser was geared at targeting the Library’s needs.
Ray Hohenkirk, PR Director, Sunrise Rotary Club
“Well, we have adopted literacy as our primary focus in terms of community work and we are focusing on education for children primarily, and the Port Loyola project is one of the project that we’ve chosen to try to execute the literacy programme that we’ve implemented.”

“What is the target amount that is needed for this project to be done?”
Ray Hohenkirk
“The estimates are about two hundred thousand dollars. To date, we have raised roughly a little less than half of that amount, but we are planning to have fundraising activities at least every three months geared towards achieving that target hopefully by the end of next year May.”

The winners of the ten prizes will get to stay overnight at resorts countrywide.
