Man gets five years in jail for stealing twenty-four dollars
And in more news from the courts, a man who was found guilty of the robbery of twenty-four dollars will have to spend five years in prison for the crime. Leon Walford was sentenced this morning in Magistrates’ Court for the incident which occurred on December twenty-seventh, 2007. According to twenty-seven year old Billa Marquina, she was at Nichole’s Store on Cemetery Road when Walford walked into the store and grabbed at her purse. Marquina says she caved in fearing for her life after her attacker pushed his hand into his pocket as if he was reaching for a gun. Not a moment later, Walford scurried out the door and Marquina and other store customers set chase. Fortunately for them, Police Sergeant Jose Zetina was heading down Glenn Street on his way to work when he saw the commotion. Zetina pursued the perpetrator, caught him, and recovered the stolen purse. In court, Walford claimed amnesia and in a statement from the dock, said he passed out at a bar and after regaining consciousness, he found himself at the K.H.M.H.
In addition to the charge of robbery, Walford still has pending charges of Attempted Murder, Dangerous Harm, and Use of Deadly Means of Harm for the stabbing of Cedric Martinez on July thirteenth. He is scheduled to return to court on September seventeenth for a preliminary investigation to determine if the matter should be sent up to the Supreme Court.
