Customs hold two for suspect “medicine”
We begin the newscast tonight with a breaking report that Police and Customs officials are investigating another suspect shipment that arrived in Belize last week on Taca Airlines. A trace of the parcel showed that it originated all the way from Dubai, making its way to Guatemala and Belize as its next stop. Two persons are in custody and will be charged tomorrow. According to the reports, a Belize resident went to pick up the parcel from the Customs claiming it was “dialysis medicine” for kidney treatment. But Customs officials were on the lookout and when they opened the parcels in the presence of the claimant, it contained over ten thousand packets of another substance with the potent and illegal component called Pseudoephedrine. When extracted, pseudoephedrine can be chemically combined with other substances to manufacture Methamphetamine or crystal meth, which is more addictive than heroine or cocaine. Belize has completely banned the legal importation of any medicine that contains Pseudoephedrine following a Statutory Instrument which took effect last June. In the last six months there have been three instances where suspect shipments have mysteriously disappeared. It is believed that Belize is being used as a transshipment point for drugs heading north.
