Glenn Tillett takes S.S.B.’s Telemedia investment to Court

The Social Security Board made the decision to use fifty million dollars of the people’s money to buy shares in Telemedia. It did so over the objections of the social partners: the National Trade Union Congress of Belize, the Belize Business Bureau and the Belize Chamber of Commerce. The social partners have not gone beyond that, but a private citizen and talk show host, Glenn Tillett filed a claim in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, challenging the S.S.B. decision. Tillett is raising a conflict of interest argument. He claims that, according to the Social Security Act and the Laws of Belize, it was unlawful for Mr. Net Vasquez, while he was a paid executive chairman of Telemedia, to sit as a member of Social Security Investment Committee and vote in favor of S.S.B. buying shares in Telemedia. The same he says is true of Lois Young Barrow who, as a member of the Social Security Board, voted to buy shares in Telemedia, a company in which she is a paid company secretary and in which her son is a director. He is asking the court to set aside the decisions of the Investment Committee as well as the S.S.B. to purchase the Telemedia shares.

“I’m asking that the decision to purchase shares be reversed. That it not go through at this time. That the consideration and the decision be done without Lois Young Barrow or Nestor Vasquez input. Miss Young serves on the Social Security Board, she serves on B.T.L. and she’s also the government’s attorney. She should not vote. That is not just a mere conflict of interest; it’s a triple conflict of interest. Mister Vasquez is the chairman of both B.T.L. and the investment committee/ that is ridiculous and to say because you have some unnamed attorney’s opinion that that is not so. I cannot accept that.
I believe deep in my duty as a citizen of this country. I have worked for this country. I have been a contributor to the social security fund from its inception. I believe in it. I also believe at this time that the decision to purchase shares in B.T.L. at this time is wrong. I believe it is ethically, morally and I believe it is illegal. I am asking the courts to clear up once and for all, whether or not if people like Miss Lois Young Barrow can serve three masters in this case. I believe it’s a conflict of interest. I believe she should have recused herself from the decision. I believe Mister Vasquez should have removed himself from the decision. I cannot see how they can, in good conscience, say that they can make a fair and balanced decision in this matter. I am aggrieved that the unions and the business representatives are being disrespected in this manner. These people were put there to protect our interest. They are not being obstructionists. They are simply asking that their concerns are being addressed and their concerns are our concerns.”

Mr. Tillett you are a true Belizean hero, It is very obvious that SSB was hyjacked and SSB
belongs to the Belizean People–not those few individuals who are ready and have done
tremendous damages to Belize. This should be a class action suit with the Belizean people

I think it is a bit disingenuous to include Dennys on the list considering this man as been an outstanding legal professional long before his brother became a leader of the UDP.
Your suggestion as usual is quite hypocritical but we wouldn’t expect anything else. When PUP was in government, we had a similar situaution with a small group of Palestinians families running things. If anyone would bother to sit down like you and make a list I think you will find that we can produce a similar list from the PUP with their wives, sons, daughters, nieces and nephews only they may not even be qualified like Lois, Deanne and Dennys. Look everyone know nepotism occurs in Belize, we’d be a bloody fool to think otherwise. And yes I think its time to put and end, but the three lawyers qualify fairly to be there. When ever a party change occur in Belize we have this same nonsense of abuelita/o, Hijos/as, sabrinas knowing that their Tios will get them a job. With regards to musical ambassador I don’t think he is paid for this position, and (2) apart from the late Martinez can you name someone who you believe would be better suited for the role? You even manage to talk about Mr Vasquez, need I say anymore….? Maybe some people are paid to spread propaganda and in which case go ahead as I wouldn’t like to knock bread out of your mouth. I applaud Mr. Tillett for his courage. The matter at hand is the monies being manhandled by the SSB crooks. SSB for years has been giving out scholarships, paying their employees ridiculous bonus (free trips), sponsoring events and buying shares.
It is not their money to do so! It is we, the people’s money and they have no right to do as they please with it. Now add the fact that the crookery has worsened at SSB, and Barrow and family think they can do what they want, things are not looking good. It is frustrating to have our hand tieds and not be able to do something. I hope more free-thinking Belizeans join the fight against this travesty.

I applaud Mr. Tillett for what he has done. Someone should have stood up a long time to say something. Its true the whole Barrow along with all the other Minister’s family are holding executive posts in this Government. I am a fanatic to no party, and it disgusts me when some party fanatics can’t see further than their nose what is happening in this country. Any conflict, “oh the other party did it!” Please, this Govt promised transparency, no corruption etc, that why I voted for them and now it makes me sick to see and hear all they are doing. we don’t want to hear what the PUP did, that’s why they were voted out because betterment was promised. Leave the Governor General alone. He has done a lot for the country in encouraging education, music and other activities in the schools. Through his contribution in encouraging music in the schools, Belize now has great marching bands and the kids are proud of their achievements. In the long run Belize will benefit from musically talented kids who eventually will enhance our music industry which is basically dead musician wise as this time.
ALL Belizeans need to STOP PAYING Social Security. YOU get NOTHING in return when you NEED it. If EVERYONE STOPS paying towards Social SEcurity it will become BROKE and go away within a few months and Belize will BE FREE of THIEVES and Money wasters. SAY NO to the SS
