7 year old boy accidentally shoots himself
Due to the volume of news on Monday night, we did not include our report on the accidental shooting of a seven year old school boy. The standard one student from St Mary’s Primary School has been unable to attend classes since the beginning of the week due to the shooting. Keron Coleman is at home at Majestic Alley recovering from an injured hand. The young boy found a gun under his house on Sunday and according to his mother, it may have been hidden there by a relative or neighbor. News Five’s Delahnie Bain reports.

The blood trail of stains leading into the home of Nicole Aviles is a reminder of a terrifying incident on Sunday afternoon. Her seven year old son, Keron Coleman, found a gun under their verandah and accidentally shot himself in the hand.

“When I mi done eat I gone put down di plate and wash my hand. Den when I done wash my hand I look under the verandah and I si di thing. When I pull di gun, di gun mi shot me inna my finga.”

“I noh even mi know he di fool wit di gun. I neva mi know wah gun mi deh unda di verandah neither. I mi deh inna my room and I hear wah loud bang. So I run out ah my room wit my bredda and my younger son.”
Both Aviles and Coleman were in shock as they rushed to the hospital.

“I hurry up went inside then I gone and hail my ma so my ma could run out deh with me and before I gone inside I di hold my hand den when I done gone inside I seh ma, ma I get shot and dat dah when mi ma run out deh so wit me.”

“I grab my son and I run through Majestic Alley fi get help fi try get wah taxi and wah lady mi di call fi police. So we get inna taxi and we gwein dah hospital. While at the hospital I ask my son if he mi di play wit wah gun. He said no. I ask him if somebody give him a gun fi hold. He said yes. I ask if he know dah who. He seh he noh know di person.”

“When taxi mi done gone police di come back yah and police di come back yah. Den police di ask me questions bout weh happen. Dah weh happen. Den I tell dehn I get shot.”
Coleman had to be prompted for information about finding the gun and was forthcoming only after his mother assured him he wouldn’t get in trouble.

“I usually tell him if yoh si dehn thing yoh tell yo mommy mek mommy do something bout it. You noh fool wit it, you noh touch it, yoh noh play wit it, yoh move from round it because yoh could get hurt or yoh could hurt someone. Dat dah weh I constantly tell him so I noh know weh possess him fi go play wit dat gun. I just thank God dat dah ih hand and ih neva ketch ah inna ih face or inna ih body parts or nothing like dat. I thank God dah just ih hand and nothing major; just ih finga dat got affected. I was devastated.”

“Well, at the time he got shot he was very frighten he was very scared. And after that he cool, he calm, like nothing happen. Only this morning when we ker ah fi get dressing he di bawl out caz ih start to pain him. Other than that he’s not normal, give trouble as usual like nothing happen to ah.”

The gun, a point thirty-eight Smith and Wesson revolver, is now in the hands of the police along with four live rounds.
If the mother suspected that relatives used the outside of her home as a hiding place for a weapon, why did she not confronted her relative about his assumed hiding place before this incident. Anyway, the boy escaped with his life, and unfortunately the boy had to learn a lesson the painful way; hopefully this little incident will be enough to keep him away from guns, forever.
I am glad this did not end up in a bigger tragedy but I am hearing two different stories. The boy first said that someone he didn’t know gave him the gun, then the story changed to he found it. We need to raise our children with integrity if we want them to grow into good citizens & help turn the violence around in Belize.
it sounds as if guns are always around since the mother kept saying if u see them thing tell mommy dont touch means she expected him to see it maybe by accident because its around the household my opinion is she knw who the gun belongs to
The kid is lucky he is still alive but apparently he is not being truthful about how he came in contact with the gun, this is about the age where the problems start in Belize apparently someone outside the family has a greater influence on this child than his mother this needs to be fixed the end results could be devastating if continues unabated they will soon have him selling their drugs if not already.
