Saffiyah, Reporting
Hey guys, I’m Saffiyah and this is What’s Happening Belize. I’m here to tell you what’s happening and where it’s happening so you won’t have anymore excuses people. You’ll always have something to do on the weekends. The place to be this weekend is definitely Benque Viejo del Carmen for their huge Benque fest. This year’s festival promises to be bigger and better. We spoke to Mayor Sosa of Benque and he had this to say about the weekend’s festivities.
Marconi Sosa, Mayor, Benque Viejo
“We have a beauty pageant and that in itself is a big attraction to commence the activities of the municipal fair. Saturday we are having the hydro extreme mountain bike race from Benque Viejo to the Mollejon hydro electric. A big attraction is the champion of champion football cup, it’s the first time in Belize that something like that ever takes place. Sunday we have the third annual Benque Fiesta Band Festival. In terms of dances, we have Friday; Electro Sounds and Cloud Nine and Saturday we have Gilharry 7, Chico Ramos from Belize City and a mobile discothèque from Chetumal, Mexico. Sunday we have Gilharry 7, Chico Ramos and Dignitaries.”
Now let’s meet the contestants of the pageant.

Yvette Elisa Yacab

Jule Castillo
“The most important part for me is the part where we have to express ourselves.”
Chelsy Coleman
“The most exciting part would be the modelling with the bath suits and the cultural dances that we’re going to have.”
Michelle Acaba
“What I’m excited about is to listen to the people scream for us and supporting us.”
Yvette Elisa Yacab

Yvette Elisa Yacab

All right guys, now since you’re going up to Benque, when you’re done with the fair on Saturday night make sure you go out to Cahal Pech the super hype Wayne Wonder concert. The concert will be real crazy, featuring DJs like Belizean Movements, cloud Nine sounds and DJ Bush. So remember the concert starts at nine p.m. up at Cahal Pech on Saturday night. If you would like tickets in advance they are only forty dollars, available at More FM, Tambran and the Record Shack. Well, my time is coming to an end but before I go I must remind you that the Duets live show starts this week at the Bliss. Tickets are only two dollars. Come on you can’t get a better deal than that for a night of entertainment. I sat down with William and asked him what he’s most excited about.
William Neal, Host, Duets
“I think it’s going to really show the diversity of talents that we have in Belize and also give the people competing an opportunity to show people that they are extremely talented. On a regular basis, the shows, people tend to really surprise you and it’s a peeling away of layers of people as they come on stage. You stick a camera there and people who may be very conservative suddenly become this Clark Kent and Superman kinda persona and I think that’s the thing that’s really fascinating.”
So make sure if you can, you come out on Tuesday night for the show at nine. You’re probably wondering why come out when I can just watch it on TV. Well I’ll let William tell you that.
William Neal
“The live shows are usually very fascinating because there is a great interaction between the audience and the judges and somehow I play referee between all of that. During the breaks sometimes we have people coming up from the audience to do little things that you don’t expect. And it’s not televised but once you get there it’s a well rounded experience and it’s usually very family oriented. So once you come down to the Bliss Center, I think it’s an experience that is like no other because it’s like I think the biggest live show that you’ll have for Belize in terms of television and live viewing audience.”
Well that’s all for now on What’s Happening Belize. I’m Saffiyah and I’ll bee back with you right here next week. Until then, do something fun and exciting and enjoy your country. Bye.
