San Ignacio Hotel hit, no arrests yet
Police are yet to make an arrest for an armed robbery at one of Belize’s more prominent hotels. The hold-up occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning at the San Ignacio Hotel on Buena Vista Street. The thieves tied up one of the security guards and ordered the other to open the cash register. One of the guards, Sheldon Guzman, told police that the first masked gunman approached him as he was about to check the dining room area for the night’s sales report. The intruder then pointed a handgun at him and ordered him to be quiet and lie on the floor. At that point, a shot went off which scarred the assailant, who then took Sheldon to the swimming pool store room and asked for assistance on how to exit the Hotel. But that wasn’t the end of the nightmare. On his way to the front desk, another masked gunman approached Sheldon and took him to the front desk where he found that a cash register was already opened and the other guard, Geston Guzman, was lying on the floor handcuffed with a towel over his head. This second gunman ordered Sheldon to open the next cash register, which he emptied making away with four hundred dollars. Not pleased with the small amount, the gunman demanded the keys to a locker, and when that was not available, left the hotel. In total, the men got away with two thousand one hundred dollars in cash and a point thirty-eight revolver. Police have not recovered the weapon or the money.
