2 drowning over the New Year’s weekend
There were two drownings reported since the start of the New Year. One happened in a lagoon at the Country Side Park in Spanish Lookout community around three on New Year’s Eve. It claimed the life of twenty nine year old Eddy Dueck, a visiting Canadian who was jet skiing in the lagoon. Police reports are that Dueck was preparing for a picnic and had only gone in the water for a short while on the jet ski. Shortly after, the vessel was discovered floating in the water but Dueck was missing. Dueck’s body was found twelve hours later on New Year’s in the lagoon.
The other case occurred near South Water Caye sometime around noon today. It claimed the life of sixty four year old Judith Ferrill of Colorado, USA. Ferrill, police say, went scuba diving with fourteen other tourists when she began experiencing breathing problems in the water. She was placed in a boat but attempts to revive her were futile. She died shortly after. Post mortems are scheduled on both bodies to definitively determine the causes of death.
That’s why you should go scuba diving with only the best Dive Shops and not with amateur guides that claim they know it all.
not entirely true! You can be the best at what you know and !@#$ can still happen to you!
That’s a ridiculous and reckless statement.. Before you allege incompetence by a certified dive master/instructor operating from a respected resort dive operation, look to more likely issues. Start first by medically clearing the 64 year old woman. SCUBA diving is considered a hazardous sport by many insurance agencies. It seems easy and that’s the allure but the reality is that SCUBA diving is a technically and physically demanding activity that requires considerable training not so much to dive, but to be able to cope with emergencies.
Damn shame…you come for a little vacation and end up dead. Under water currents can surprise even the best swimmers. Tragic what happened to these two.
