PM says his blog not posted on Channel Five

Just one day after his Cabinet announced resumption of normal relations with this station, the PM was on Love FM’s Morning Show jabbing at Channel Five while confirming that, indeed, “normal” relations had been restored with this station. In defending his government’s decision to freeze out Channel Five from ministerial and public officers’ interviews, the PM accused us of “violating ALL the canons of journalistic ethics”.  This was a new ground added to the list of sins this station has supposedly committed against the government. But all he offered as examples of our supposed breach of journalistic ethics was that in one interview the Leader of the opposition got five paragraphs while he got two sentences. The PM also made the accusation that we censor our news blog.  This, he said, he knows because he asked people to post entries and he did not see them appear.  For the record, this station, like all responsible media houses, removes entries that are libelous, offensive or scandalous. Following that interview, he spoke to News Five about the ban.

Marion Ali

“Is there something that can be outlined, is there any stipulation, who decides, who judges what is impartiality?  Both sides have made their positions known.”

Dean Barrow

“Ultimately the government has to be the judge, but the question of airing the weekly program, Belmopan Weekly, that’s been sorted out.  The C.E.O. had no difficulty with that.  In terms of the way you report your news, let me tell you, I for myself, will be very liberal or perhaps very realistic is the correct word, your C.E.O. has said there is a minimum level of professionalism from which she will not depart.  I was satisfied in terms of talking to your C.E.O. that she issue that she has relations with external news agencies which she takes very seriously and she does not want to be characterized with any degree of accuracy as being biased and unfair and unprofessional. I take her at her word.”

  2. concern belizean says:

Is Dean Barrow for real? How on earth can he could go on national television and say that government has to be the judge on what is impartial or not with regards to what the media report on. This guys is getting too big for himself.
First he tried to censor Channel 5, now he wants to be the judge and decide if a news report is bias or not.
Barrow, u walking on thin ice!!!

  3. BZNinCALI says:

Dean, if it’s any consolation, some of us have no real party affiliation, we complained when the PUP administration was screwing up too. The only difference was that we did not have a visible forum.

  4. barrow says:

  5. Justice says:

Mr PM , be a man and post your own entries. This is a free country or so we thought! You want to be a dictator? The days of Hitler has been long gone. This is a different century so do not suppress anyone least of all the media who is so far the only hope for Belize!

  6. REGGIE says:

The real deal is that the PM realized what he did after he opened his big mouth. He wants to undo what has been done. He will be known in the history books of Belize as the first Prime Minister to “attempt” to censor a media house. He had to bow down under the pressure but you can bet you will never hear him say…”I’m Sorry” or “I made a mistake”. Resuming normal relations with Channel 5 was his way of trying to undo this. Too bad…cause he has already let the cat out of the bag…and the cat is never going back in.

I am sorry PM But for you to say that ultimately the Government has to be the Judge of impartiality in the year 2011, WOW, it does not sound good. It shows a view of how government believes they control our lives and thoughts. Concentrate on our crime status that is killing us as a nation and there seemss to be no plan nor any defense and passion as you seem to have on channel 5. Show that same passion on solving our crime situation.. Come on PM concentrate on the real issues and not waste time on petty things..We arre a nation of 375,000 people and we are ranked among the top ten most violent countries. Imagine when we are a population of a million. Leadership to control crime in a nation of 375,000 is the real test as a leader for any government and the people should take all political leaders responsible for this which is at the top of our minds and our way of living in dire suffering as belizeans. Its does not matter which party. I am a normal belizean with a family and i worry everyday about my family and would love to see our PM have the same tenacity and fierceness in this front but it seems that belize has become ingobernable and the crime mafia is controling our society and the rest just sail along with it. Again it does not matter which political party and this should be our condition to any party who wants to be leader.. Show us your plan to eliminate crime and we will hold you accountable for it. Hardworking, law abiding belizeans need it, our children need it…

IAM NOT SURE WHAT TYPE OF STUFF ‘HIS PEOPLE’ TRIED TO POST, BUT I KNOW FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, CHANNEL 5 DID CENSOR COMMENTS I POSTED CONCERNING WHAT I FELT WAS THE UNFAIRNESS OF SMART TELEPHONE USERS BEING THE ONLY ONES ABLE TO VOTE, DURING ONE OF THEIR SINGING COMPETITIONS LAST YEAR.

  11. Al says:

Did the PM actually say that he aske people to write bloggs for him. Wow, see how controlling he is, then he actually had time to read the news to look for the bloggs. What a vindictaive, time wasting PM is this. Playing games instead of doing something positive. If he were an effective PM he would not have to plant bloggers, there would not be enough space for the positive blogging. If President Obama took the time to react to every negative thing written or said about him he would have no time to run the USA. Grow up PM.

  12. Earl Grey says:

    FOLLOW HIM ON TWEETER?????????

    DON’T BE A TWIT…………….

  13. BELIZEANGYPSY says:

What a bloody imbecil , Opposition got 5 I only got 2. Grow up Dean Barrow and stop whining like a spoil brat, you are a leader act like one. If you cannot make fruitful comments then don’t do media interviews where all we hear is about the injustices that is being shown towards you.

  14. Kay says:

Can you all say in harmony “FIDEL CASTRO/ HUGO CHAVEZ” I think leadership has gone to the PM’s dome of a head. Next he’ll want to shut don’t all non-conforming radio/tv stations. He better be careful Belizeans don’t get like Honduras who shipped out their President for trying to screw with their constitution cause only Taiwan might sorry for that stray dog and take him in.

  15. Time says:

MAYBE P.M. PEOPLE’S WERE WRITING CROP. (CRUSING AND THINGS LIKE DAT)… CAZ FOR 1 YR IM WRITING ON CHANNEL 5 BLOG & THEY NEVER BLOCK NONE OF MY COMMENTS… THIS IS HOW MOST OF THE BELIZEANS LIVING ABORD KEEP UP WITH THE NEWS BACK HOME. HE NEEDS TO SIMMER, HIMSELF AND TRY FIX COST OF LIVING AND THE CRIME IN BZE. & LEAVE CHANNEL FIVE ALONE…

  16. The People Had Enough says:

Dean….Oliver….Barrow: Elected Prime Minister of Belize; has undoubtedly acquired the title of the biggest embarrassment to blackmen in Belize. When he won as PM back in 2008 people jumped for joy and said he was the first black man to be PM of Belize…and he has swiftly made history by showing that as a black man he failed the black people of Belize. Barrow could have done a lot for Belize; he had the potential, but he is simply a narcissistic prick who worships money, fame and power and is so disassociated from the reality of Belizeans that it is not even worth making a joke about.

  17. rootsman says:

The People Had Enough, I was not familiar with your narcissistic term but I looked it up and I think you might be on to something here; think all of our leaders should undergo a psychoanalysis evaluation before they are qualified to run for office, here is a web site with explanation.
