Good Samaritan rescues woman in distress
Knights in shining armor rescuing women in distress are the stuff of storybooks but on Friday another Belize City student was more than relieved to have a Good Samaritan strapped with steel come to her aid. Around three-thirty on Friday afternoon eighteen year old Rea Bonner and a friend were heading to class at Saint John’s College when two men rode up to them. According to Bonner, One of the cyclists grabbed her hand and then pushed his hand into her pocket to steal her cell phone. But before the thieves could do anything else a man passing the scene in a pick-up truck realized what was happening, grabbed his licensed handgun and was able to detain one of the culprits until the police could arrive. Eighteen year old Victor Avilez of Faber’s Road has since been charged with Robbery. He appeared in Magistrates’ Court today and was offered but could not meet bail of three thousand dollars. Avilez is scheduled to reappear in court on July seventh. Police continue to look for the second suspect.
