… As mayor gears up for challenge of elections

Story PictureAnd while most people agree that paving streets is what City Councils are supposed to do, the cynical among us see the early stirrings of next year’s municipal election campaign. This week’s edition of the Guardian Newspaper is already inviting people to submit nominations for the posts of mayor and city councilors in what promises to be a highly competitive process. Mayor Moya told us that the decision was one that the party took over a month ago in consultation with herself and the Council and she heartily supports it.

Zenaida Moya, Belize City Mayor
“We didn’t want that people are just simply endorsed because that would not look well on the party.”

Marion Ali
“Ok, but are you going to contest?”

Zenaida Moya
“Yes, yes I will contest of course and I hope to garner the support of the residents of Belize City once again.”

Marion Ali
“And you’re in support of this move to have other people come on board and contest?”

Zenaida Moya
“Yeah, definitely. I think everybody who knows me knows that I welcome challenges. It solidifies my own position as Mayor once again. There’s a lot of people within the party who feel that we should not have to go that route because they feel that I have proven myself, I have done a good job and I have been able to steer the ship even without the support that we should have gotten. But myself, being a team player, I will not stop democracy and again I welcome any challenges.”

Marion Ali
“So what will be your platform?”

Zenaida Moya
“Our platform, because when I go in it’s not only me it’s a team. I work with a team, and it would be One Good Term Deserves Another. I have put in all that I could have to ensure success for the City Council and for our party and I certainly can say wholeheartedly that I have given it my all.”

Municipal elections nationwide are due in March 2009.
