Cayo man acquitted of rape charge
A man accused of rape was acquitted today after his victim refused to testify against him. When the now eighteen year old took the stand this morning she told the court that she wanted no further action in the case. Crown Counsel Tracy Sosa had no other evidence to offer so Justice Herbert Lord instructed the jury of nine to find thirty-two year old Enrique Cocom not guilty of Rape. The complainant had reported to police that on July first, 2006, Cocom forced her into his taxi and raped her. After the trial, Cocom maintained that he never even had sex with the girl, saying she had a crush on him and wanted them to run away and get married, but he refused. Cocom was represented by attorney Lionel Welch.
