Belize City man run down and shot for “old beef”

A twenty-two year old student will not be able to sit exams because he is recuperating from injuries suffered when he was knocked down and shot. The assault reportedly occurred shortly after seven Sunday night when two men, who were in a white Jeep Cherokee, chased Grant on his bicycle on Vernon Street from Lakeview Street to Youth for the Future Drive. News Five caught up with the victim, Darrel Grant, who says he was talking to a young lady when he noticed the vehicle speeding the wrong way with two men—known only as Black and Teddy—inside. Grant recounted his harrowing experience and says he believes the incident was triggered by a past dispute.

“I done di to the young gial I see wah vehicle di come up stop, wah Cherokee. Dehn knock me down and Black jump out, put di gun da my head and ih just di talk and di talk. Like I just feel wah lee vibes and I box di gun and ih gone off. Wen ih gone off now boy jump out and seh mek ih deal wid weh ih got fi deal wid and ih just start open up fire. If dehn seh I da gang dat dah dat but I noh really … I dah noh like dat again.”

“Yeah something like dat. I think I mi done dead already but I still deh yah soh.”

Aside from the gunshot wounds to his right hip and fingers on his left hand, Grant also suffered a broken right leg when the vehicle knocked him down. He is now confined to crutches and a wheel chair until his fracture heals. Police have detained one suspect but have not yet filed any charges against him.
