Belize City mother charged w/beating child to death
A Belize City mother accused of beating her two year-old baby girl to death was formally charged with the crime in Magistrate’s Court this morning. Twenty-one year old Shian Whyte, a food vendor of Zacaranda Street, Belize City, was silent during her arraignment for Manslaughter before Magistrate Dorothy Flowers. Because the matter is an indictable offence and will be tried in the Supreme Court, no plea was taken. Whyte’s two year old daughter Delcy died shortly after eleven on Tuesday morning from a fractured skull and severe head trauma. Her death has also forced the Department of Human Services to investigate similar injuries inflicted to Delcy’s four month old brother, Kenroy Whyte. The infant is admitted at the Paediatric ward of the K.H.M.H. with a fractured skull and will be released in the care of a social worker. In her initial report to police, Whyte said that the children suffered the injuries while in the care of her boyfriend, Leon Lopez on Sunday morning while she was at a friend’s house in the same yard. But since that statement, investigators tell News Five that Whyte has confessed to beating both children with a piece of stick in a fit of rage. Whyte was offered but could not meet bail of six thousand dollars so she has been remanded to Hattieville Prison until her next court date on June twentieth.
