B.N.T.U. wants Sadie Vernon Board to resign
The situation at Sadie Vernon High School appears calm today. That’s because the vocal teaching staff has agreed to be quiet while they hope to meet with the board of management to trash out the numerous issues that they believe have been hampering education and development of students and staff. Last Thursday, two teachers were fired and on Friday the students were sent home as teachers protested the firing of their colleagues. The Belize Teachers Union issued a press release on Monday condemning the Board of Management and called on it to resign. With backing from the BNTU, the teachers have caught the attention of the Ministry of Education. A ministry representative has said that it prefers that the board carries out its mandate; however, the ministry will issue its own statement on Sadie Vernon High School on Wednesday.
It seems that the issue of principals running the boards of management rather than vice versa is becoming prevalent in the Belizean society. We need to look closel y at this issue when a school selects their BOM. Ministry MUST ensure that BOM members are trained as to their responsibilities.
In many cases the principals of the schools are far more trained than the board members themselves and that, eventually leads in the principal running the board rather than the board overseeing the running of the school.
This has happened in many schools, and is happening subtly in many more, where the principal’s word becomes the board’s word. The incident not long ago at escuela mexico is a classical example of this. When this happens the ministry is forced to take action to bring stability to the school, just to be dragged later to court and scolded for their action – action which was needed to be done by ministry for the benefit of the students and teachers.
TEACHERS – BE CAREFUL WHO YOU CHOOSE FOR YOUR BOM… DONT BE LED BY YOUR PRINCIPAL INTO CHOOSING THE WRONG PEOPLE…. OR YOU MIGHT RUN THE SAME LUCK AS ESCUELA MEXICO DID AND NOW SADIE VERNON IS DOING!!!
Who is the principal? Is Mr Humes the public relations personnel? The BOARD HAVE 2 GO!
I think that Mr Humes is taking this personal, he does not know anything about the audit and he is speaking what he was told to speak.Teacher all around the worls go through a lot when dealing with students especailly those students who have rigths. As a educator and a fallower of the crisis at Sadie Vernon I think thqta the goverment shouild go a invesication oand not leavcing up to the board.
This crisis appears to be going on for the past 3 years at the institution. If there is so much opposition against the actions of the principal, MOE needs to seriously look into the matter. The minister of education was on KREM stating that the teachers should used the proper channels to voice their concerns…… I could tell you from experience as being a union executive here in Belize, IT WON’T WORK. The teachers made the right decision after they had exhausted all possible options. I agree with the above comment about the appointment of the school boards. They are controlled by the principal in many institutions. To the Sadie Vernon teachers, BE WISE, BE CAREFUL, BE THE BEST TEACHERS YOU CAN BE.
