Farmers of the year announced by Ag Show Committee
The National Agriculture and Trade Show Committee has announced this year’s farmers of the year. Senior farmer of the year is Marcelino Cal of San Jose Village in the Toledo District. He produces fruits and vegetables, root crops, chickens, eggs, beef, milk, cheese and honey, using irrigation and improved pasture for livestock.
Woman farmer of the year is Brenda Arevalo of Progresso Village in the Cayo District. She grows fruits and vegetables as well as raises chickens, pigs, cattle and horses. The committee commended her for her precise record keeping and establishment of a miniature model farm to educate visitors.
Junior farmer of the year is Juan Tzib of San Antonio, Cayo. Tzib processes and markets honey as well as different types of cheese from his dairy cattle. He also uses improved irrigation practices to grow vegetables and maintains a variety of fruit trees. The three farmers of the year will be honoured at the opening of this year’s National Agriculture and Trade Show on Friday, May sixteenth in Belmopan.
