Belizeans may seek employment in southern Mexico

When Belizeans think of heading north to find work, what’s usually on their mind is California, New York, Texas or any other of the forty-seven states comprising the U.S.A. But that may be changing, as a release from the government of the United States of Mexico indicates that Belizeans may now be legally employed in that country—albeit with proper documentation. Recognising the need for an adequate labour force in Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas, the Mexican government is initiating a programme to allow Belizeans one year temporary employment in these neighbouring states. Applicants will need to have a letter from a Mexican employer, stating salary as well as fill out a formal application that must be approved by the Mexican government. For more information please call 223-0193 or 223-0194 in Belize City. It should be noted that many Belizeans are employed in Mexico—both legally and illegally—particularly in tourism centers like Cancun and Playa del Carmen where the ability to speak fluent English is an asset.
