Texmar Boys are champions of Belize Bank’s Super League

Story PictureGood evening, I’m James Adderley, this is Sports Monday.

The tension inside the Michael Ashcroft Stadium for game two of the three game Super League Championship series between Benque DC United and the host team Texmar Boys is as thick as a well made cow foot soup going into game time. Facing a one game deficit, Benque Viejo looks for the early lead off this set piece triggered by Elias Donaire that is kept out of goal by Steven Lopez. The home team responds with this brilliant run from Ashley Torres whose attempt to finish is truly lacking. It’s more excitement when Arnold Torres beats William Luna to this ball and turns around to fire at goal in an unsuccessful attempt. At the other end, this defensive header by Dalton Eiley provides an opportunity for the streaking Trevor Lennon who gets robbed by a wonderful recovery from goalkeeper Lopez. In the meantime, there’s no doubt that Texmar is the protagonist when this corner kick ends up at the feet of Marvin Leslie who fires a screamer that also turns out to be a high riser. The relentless pressure of the home team pays dividends at the thirty-second minute when Arnold Torres picks out Marvin Leslie who gives Texmar a 1-zip lead. A minute later this spot kick gives Freddie Cruz an open look at goal for the equalizer but his delay allows Arnold Torres to record an excellent defensive block. Texmar continues in the ascendance off this set piece that sees Arnold Torres’s header almost make it to a 2-nil score. At the half Texmar Boys from the south still boast a 1-zip lead.

People, we must pay tribute to this artist who comes in at half-time to give us this monster show that electrifies the atmosphere inside the stadium. But it’s back to the main event and the visitors look for a quick equalizer off this center that sees Steven Lopez intervene. Folks the veteran, Wilmer Garcia, then gets this look at goal only to miss with the potent left foot from point blank range; that’s not good. Chalk up another miss for Texmar when Marvin Leslie fires the right foot that is denied by the near upright. Meanwhile, this connection made between Marcos Souto and Wilmer Garcia is incredible. However, Garcia again fails to finish. We’re at the sixty-second minute when Souto launches this corner kick, nobody blocks out Marvin Leslie, he gets his second goal of the match as Texmar takes a 2-zip lead. It’s all Texmar now as Jose Lemus looks to move the scoreboard but he misses the target. Eighty-two minutes in, nobody steps up on Gilmore Palacio outside the eighteen and his right foot bomb beats William Luna to make it a 3-zip ballgame. That seals the deal as Texmar Boys claim the first ever Super League of Belize football title along with the twenty thousand dollar prize. We say congratulations and the party down south does begin. Coach Hilberto Muschamp had this to say about the triumph.

Hilberto Muschamp, Coach, Texmar Boys
“We came over to the Super League to try and win this big prize and that was our focus from the onset. Fortunately for us, we accomplished our mission. I was a beautiful run and we did it without absolutely not much help and the guys just voluntarily came out week after week and trained. Sometimes when they’re down we came out and they played much harder. Tonight we just did what we gotta do to bring the championship back to Mango Creek. It’s really an honour to give back to the wonderful fans of independence, the championship here at home. We have never had the opportunity to do that before and we did that here tonight with a wonderful team with all home grown players. There’s no players from anywhere else much; all the players from this mid south area.”

Alberto Eiley, Benque D.C. United
“We lose but we know that we got another season right. But this lose, ih hurt we right but next year I wah do it good mein.”

Folks, we say congratulations to Texmar Boys and to the entire foot community down south.

Turning to the cycling scene, here is the start to yesterday’s over twenty-three cat four and five Cross Country Cycle race presented by Santino which runs from Loma Luz Santa Elena to Leslie’s Imports on the Western Highway covering some sixty-five miles or so. Colonel Lovell of Team Santino’s grabs the first station prize at Running W. at Hattieville we find a five man break away featuring Juan Gonzales, Albert Castillo, Warren Coye, Kenneth Butler and Eddie Usher in control of the pace. Around mile six a three man lead of Eddie Usher, Glen O’Brien and Juan Gonzales establishes itself. At the tape the three Santino riders remained in control as Juan Gonzales steps out to take the win, followed by Eddison Usher and Glen O’Brien in that order. In the race for fourth place Santino Castillo beats out Warren Coye, Kenneth Butler and Jim Scott in that order respectively and we say congratulations.

In other cycling news, CMT Productions from Corozal presents a Mother’s Day race for cat four and five riders only. That will travel from Texaco Service Station in Corozal to the Northern Border and then heads to Orange Walk to swing back for the finish at Miami Beach in Corozal Town. Interested riders should phone telephone numbers 624-1983 or 622-1549 to get in.

In billiards news, the Belmopan Billiards Association held a one day nine ball tournament at Glen’s Bar in Roaring Creek yesterday. Of the five teams that started it was Special Effects Sharp Shooters beating Rookies Hi-Five to win the event and we say congratulations.

Finally folks, here are the weekend results from the Yarborough Sporting Club under fifteen basketball tournament. Poor and Famous edged Mesop Bulldogs 41-37, Primary School All Stars ran over Kraal Road 29-10, Mesop Bulldogs rebounded to beat Southside Ballers 39-20 and Primary Schools All Stars made it two in a row by stopping Collet Lake 23-18. Top players emerging from the weekend are Michael Augustine of the All Stars and Alejandro Baptist of Mesop.

Hey folks, let the children play. That’s it for now though. We invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
