P.U.P. leader prepares for March municipal elections

Story PictureOn Friday, he led Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition in the House of Representatives, but today Johnny Briceño is actively preparing to face off with the U.D.P. in the 2009 municipal elections. According to Briceño, the idea now is to organise new constituency teams in all divisions to support the fresh faces that will offer themselves for election. The Peoples’ United Party leader told us the record of the municipal governments during their time in office will work in the Opposition’s favour.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition
“There’s a lot, when you look at the report card of these councils across this country, pretty much all of them would be making an F but despite all of that we do recognize it’s going to be a tough election for us. But we are confident that we will be able to do well and we are looking at getting good candidates, new people coming in, people with the credibility, with the experience, with the ability to able to run for their respective communities. So we do believe that we will be able to do well in the next election. It’s going to be a process, it’s going to take us some time to get back that confidence of the Belizean people and I believe that with the new executive that we have, with all the people who are coming back, offering themselves, I do believe that it’s something that we can do more sooner than later.”

As for the fate of the party’s Queen Street headquarters, the Belize Times newspaper and the Positive Vibes radio station, Briceño says negotiations to finalise ownership are still ongoing.
