Toledo couple shot during armed robbery
The villages of the Toledo district are not often the scene of gun violence but an armed robbery in the usually quiet community of San Pedro Columbia has left residents concerned about their safety. According to police, around eight last night husband and wife Alumberto and Petrona Cal were around their dinner table when three masked men armed with nine millimetre handguns burst into their home and ordered the couple to lie on the ground while they ransacked the house and adjoining grocery store. The trio found more than eight thousand dollars in cash, a gold chain and a watch, but before leaving with the loot, shot the husband and wife once each in their legs. Initial investigations have revealed that while only three men entered the home, as many as five may have been involved in the attack. The Cals have been admitted to ward at the Punta Gorda hospital and remain in stable condition.
