Prison cell raid ends in drug charges for remanded inmates
They are scheduled to stand trial in April for murder but today Taedron Bennett and Joseph Kee were back in court, charged with another crime. According to court reports, on Tuesday Chief Security Officer at the Belize Central Prison Rose Kelly conducted routine searches in the remand section. But Kelly says when the officers looked inside cell number one they found two plastic bags containing a total of two hundred and forty four grams or a half pound of weed. Because of the find, all four inmates inside, twenty-seven year old Taedron Bennett, twenty-nine year old Joseph Kee, thirty-eight year old Mark Seawell and forty-nine year old Nicholas Guevarra were arrested and charged with drug trafficking. All four prisoners appeared before Chief Magistrate Margaret Mckenzie this morning where they pled not guilty to the offence. While Bennett and Kee are on remand for murder, Seawell is awaiting extradition and Guevarra is serving a life sentence. Magistrate Mckenzie has adjourned the case until May twenty-first.
