Hit and run victim claims insurer won’t pay medical bills

He was the victim of a hit and run driver last summer but tonight a seventy-year old Belize City man is claiming he’s being victimized by the insurance industry. Amos Wright was knocked off his bicycle on Central American Boulevard last July. The driver involved, Dennis Robinson was arrested four months later and pled guilty to the charges against him. The court awarded Wright five thousand dollars in compensation but the injured man maintains that not only has he not collected a cent of that money, he is still suffering from damage to his spine because Robinson’s insurance company won’t cover medical expenses.

“And I’ve been going back and forth, back and forth to Atlantic Insurance Company and all they give me is “if’s, ems and buts”. I got enough, a little after that I went back to the Diagnostic Centre, which the doctor recommended I needed to take an M.R.I. I went to take the M.R.I. and Atlantic Insurance Company called the Diagnostic Centre and said not to take that M.R.I. until they have a meeting. That was done on January seventh. Up to now I still have not gotten the M.R.I. yet. I’ve spent over ten thousand of my money already. At a later date some lawyer from Barrow and Company on Coney Drive sent a letter to my attorney offering me seventy-five hundred dollars as a final settlement. I said settlement is not my problem. What I need is medical care. My life is in—I’m in pain.”

When News Five contacted Georgina Baeza, Claims Manager at Atlantic Insurance Company Limited, she declined comment, saying the company’s attorney is still in negotiations with Wright’s lawyer. Alma Gomez, the Supervisor of Insurance in Belmopan, is also investigating the matter.
