Women’s week will kick off with Bike Rally
On Saturday, the Women’s Department will kick off its weeklong celebration and one of their first activities will be a countrywide bike rally. In Belize City, the ride starts at Western Avenue, winds its way down Central American Boulevard and Caesar Ridge Road, Regent Street, over the Swing Bridge to Queen Street, ending at the Y.W.C.A. at the Corner of Freetown and St. Thomas. According to acting Director of the Women’s Department, Icilda Humes, the event is a win-win-win situation. Participants receive cardio vascular exercise, as well as an opportunity to win one of many raffle prizes, not to mention the satisfaction of contributing to a worthy cause.

“This bike rally is for women, for men, for children. It’s open to anyone, any age group. You just have to come out and ride any type of bike. We even had someone on a motorcycle last year, we had someone on one of those unique antique bikes. People just come out and have fun because it’s not a race, it’s not about coming out on your titanium bikes and competing like it’s cross country. That’s not the idea at all. It’s just for unity, spiritual upliftment and healthy lifestyles.”
“This year we are riding for Youth Enhancement Services. There is not a registration fee attached to the event at all, but we are asking people to support, to be charitable and contribute a dollar or more and that would go towards Youth Enhancement Services, but it’s optional. There is not a registration. Registration starts at five o’clock in the morning. The rally actually starts at six. What happens when you register, you get a number and that number is also your raffle ticket?”
“After the ride we have the post bike rally and we have tons of prizes, excellent prizes. The business community continues to be supportive of the Women’s Department and Women’s Week activities so we’re very, very grateful for that. We have a cell phone, we have a round-trip ticket to Houston, we have cash prizes, have dinners, wonderful, wonderful prizes.”
Trophies are awarded to the largest team of women, the largest mixed team, youngest female rider, and oldest female rider. At the end of the bike rally, the Y.W.C.A. will be having a fundraising breakfast sale. Price is six dollars for individuals or five dollars for large groups.
