Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase features Haitian films
Haiti is the second largest island in the Greater Antilles which is still recovering from a seven point three earthquake a little over a year ago but it is getting ready to install a new president in the next few days. While most of us still have images of destruction and despair, the Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase has been featuring Haitian Films Special in Belize since Monday accounting the colorful history and rich culture of our Caribbean neighbor. The cycle of eighteen films is aimed at showing solidarity with Haiti, while highlighting their unbroken spirit and their struggles as they piece back their lives one film at a time.

“This showcase in particular that’s at the Bliss this week is a special on Haitian Films. This is umm this is to show solidarity this was a showcase put together especially to show solidarity with our Haitian brother and sisters and to recognize that it has been one year since the earthquake happened and we wanted to show people there are many faces of Haiti not just the faces you see on tv umm because of the earthquake.”

“What can the public really expect from these films?”
“Ok the showcase began Monday, it will last until Thursday. We’re showing films one thirty in the afternoon and six p.m at night. Admission is totally free. All these films were made my Haitian film makers and they all provide like a little window into what life in Haiti is really like or at least the realities of these various film makers. Some are happy, some are sad. Some are documentaries, some are feature length film, but whatever it is if you didn’t know about Haiti before it would be a great time for you to get the chance to know one of our Caribbean counter-parts. The whole concept was inspired by the fact that here in the Caribbean we hardly ever see films from the other Caribbean countries so efforts are being made; this is one of those efforts being made for us to share images.”
On Thursday at the Bliss starting at one-thirty the films: Haiti Trembles, Haiti Apocalypse Now and Port Au Prince is Mine will be showing. Later on the evening at six you can catch ‘The Passion of a Country’.
I hope that we have BELIZEAN FILMS in the works… and I mean more than just documentaries.
