Church joins Court Case in which UNIBAM wants gay rights
A case filed against the Attorney General’s Office by the United Belize Advocacy Movement (UNIBAM) and its Executive President, Caleb Orosco, has grown into a major cultural battle, involving international lawyers and now, a group of local churches. On Tuesday an application was filed by the Catholic, Anglican and Evangelical Churches, to join the case as interested parties. Attorneys Rodwell Williams SC, Eamon Courtenay SC, Michel Chebat, Jackie Marshalleck, and Chris Coye filed the application on behalf of the churches. They are going against UNIBAM, which is seeking to have section fifty-three of the criminal code declared as unconstitutional. The section reads that “carnal intercourse against the order of nature” is punishable by imprisonment of up to ten years. That law, according to UNIBAM, criminalizes homosexual relationships. And while the government and churches have some of Belize’s top attorneys on their side, UNIBAM has the backing of powerful organizations including the International Commission of Jurists, the Commonwealth Lawyers Association and the Human Dignity Trust, which have also joined the case as interested parties. A notable on their legal team is Lord Peter Goldsmith QC, the former Attorney General for England and Wales. The organizations have filed an affidavit claiming that the law is “incompatible with the rule of law and with respect for international law and international obligations enshrined in the Belize Constitution.” UNIBAM is being represented by Attorney Lisa Shoman SC while Attorney Godfrey Smith SC is on the team representing the international parties. A date has not yet been announced for the start of trial in the Supreme Court.

I see hate is alive and well. One person says he loves his homosexual family. Really! One would think otherwise. Have the hatemongers truly engaged a gay person to understand his heart. How can all this hate be good for the christian soul? Gees, the fear-mongeering while not surprising, certainly doesnt live up to the notion that you should love your neighbor as thyself. It’s a nasty and disgusting act of immorality, a man is a man identified by his manhood and should be coupled with a woman, his opposite. ….. has its purpose and that is not for sexual pleasure between two males (or females who may be gay, but not as disgusting). These homos have lost their identity as males and they mentor young boys in thinking they are gay or it is ok to be so. This is a mental misunderstanding of ones being/ identity which we should not condone as normalcy and it must be treated as a mental disorder. We need not change our laws to accommodate or debate an illness; put it in the hands of medical practitioners where it belongs. I wander if people in our country understand th crisis of our values and morality. A nation that doesn’t fear God will perish. This nation is built on families and this issue is a direct attack on the family structure. Does this matter to us? Channel 5 needs to take a poll just like it does with other issues.
Even though I cannot understand how a man finds another male to be sexually attractive, I often times wonder why a non gay person would decide to become gay knowing what they will have to indure from public scorn day in and day out. As we know many of such persons have been killed because of their orientation. Some years ago some of my colleagues and myself had a coversation on the subject, and I asked my colleagues which of them would do something if they knew that it would cause disruptionin in their family structure? One of my colleague responded that he really wanted to marry a black female but he did not marry her due to his family objection to the idea.
With such an answer from one of my colleague that was true to himself,while the others did not respond, I use that as my point of contension that gay person just did not mentally chosed their sexual orientation; that the human orientation is far more complex than black and white. I have known men and women who, in spite of them knowing that they were attracted to the same sex strongly, still got married and produced childrend and after a while they had to abodon the family because the daily mental stress of not been whom they really wanted to be was to much bear.
With due rispect to the BIble wavers and the fact that I have a great respect for the Bible up to a point, I would suggest that you folks do a lot more serious research in human history and cultures. It was the folks that truly believe that the Bible was the word of God totally, that gave Jesus a hard time and finally contributed to his death. If you all are serious about finding truth you will know that the Bible is flaud, with lots of contradictions. Only truth set man free. The Romans and Greeks bath houses for men were very previlant in Jesus’s time on earth, and no way in all of the recorded doings and sayings of Jesus’s ministry have seen where he got into conversation of a sexual nature.
I my humble opinion, the Bible as a frame of reference for such a delicate subject is not trust worthy. What I can’t rationalize is how the Catholic and AnglicanClergys have the bold face to get in on this issue. Has anyone to this forum have been following international news about the Bishops and Priest around the world that have been prosecuted by the hundreds for molesting boys.There is just too much hypocracy in these churches. The churches are loosing relivance in the lives of the masses because they stuck in one gear, and they have nothing Spiritualy new to bring to the masses that are hungry for real spiritual bread. The same old dogmas, while everything elce is changing around them.
Many of the Scandenavian countries as well as Portugal stay out people’s sex lives, realizing that its a waste of time and only contribute to division and hate in the society. In the final analysis a person soul is between them and the “”One First Cause” the Universal Father that Jesus exemplyfied so marvolously, and said, to see him with the eye of the spirit is to see the Father; and that His Father is the same Father of all mankind. He also say, whosoever will may come to him.
The bible also says you should kill your neighbour if you see him working on Sunday…. remember that all you biblical scholars next time you catch your neighour chopping his yard, fixing his house, or washing his car on the sabbath. Let’s see how far “God’s Law” gets you in court.
On one hand Belizeans are supporting murder by the State.That is what the death penalty is.The last time I read the bible it stated that murder is a sin.You can used the bible to justify anything.That is why in the greatest country in the world we seperate church from state,or other wise you would have some people using the bible to oppress blacks,women,gay,or any group they do not like.When a person can not bring an intelligent debate to the table they bring up the bible.Not everyone believe in your bible.In a free society they have the right not to believe.That is what freedom is all about.
From what bible did you get these quotes from, because no bible i have ever read his the word homosexuality in it. the verse say “A man shall not lay with man as he does with a woman.” And it refers to unwilling sexual acts, i.e. rape. Not consensual sex between men.
