Musa offers congrats, thanks supporters …

For P.U.P. leader Said Musa, it was his party’s first defeat since taking over as leader in 1996. This morning at a press conference the former Prime Minister offered appropriate congratulations and thanks … and made it clear that his party knows how to rebound.

“I would like to first of all, congratulate the people of Belize in showing the world that democracy and the rule of law is very much alive in Belize. The majority voted for a change and we respect the will of the people. I congratulate the Honorable Dean Barrow on his party’s resounding victory at the polls yesterday. It was a long, hard-fought campaign but for me, politics has never been personal. He has been a worthy opponent and I wish him and his party well as they now take on the responsibility of governance in Belize. I called him earlier this morning to congratulate him. I want to thank the voters of the Fort George division and our hard working, dedicated campaign team for showing their tremendous love and confidence in me. I thank all the party faithful of the People’s United Party in all thirty-one constituencies for their faith and belief in Belize and their passionate commitment to the work of our party. This is no time to despair. The P.U.P. has a proud history of service to the Belizean people. Our core values must be preserved and reignited policies of social justice and reconnecting with the people. I will remain engaged in this work of self-examination and re-evaluation while encouraging and indeed promoting new leadership in this great movement that lead the struggle for our independence and economic upliftment. Politics is a noble undertaking, the cause is great. Belize is a good country, blessed by the Almighty with tremendous potential and opportunities. We are handing over the reigns at a time when Belize is on the verge of an economic take-off that can and should benefit all who live and work in this beautiful jewel. The election is over, no bitterness, no recriminations, let us move on, confident that we can all make life better for everyone when we work in unity, with malice towards none and in a spirit of Belizean solidarity for the common good.”
