Driver pleads guilty in death of two sons
Forty-eight year old taxi driver Hector Menjivar, charged with two counts of Manslaughter for the death of his sons, Helson Menjivar and Allen Vargas, pleaded guilty to two counts of the lesser charge of Causing Death by Careless Conduct when he appeared today in the court of Justice Herbert Lord. Lord fined him two thousand, five hundred dollars for each count and told him to pay half by May thirtieth and the balance by September thirtieth. If he defaults on payment of the fines he will serve fifteen months in prison for each count. Menjivar was represented by attorney Oswald Twist while Crown Counsel Douglas Carr handled the prosecution. The incident occurred just before noon on December fifteenth, 2002, in Armenia Village on the Hummingbird Highway. Menjivar, a resident of Dangriga, was driving a jeep when it crashed into the back of a James bus which had stopped to let off passengers.
