High powered weapon used in city murder

After three weeks of relative peace on the streets of Belize City, over the weekend, the fourth and fifth murders of 2008 occurred within hours of each other and less than a mile apart. According to police, the first incident occurred around four on Sunday afternoon on Malcolm Street when twenty-one year old Alfred Tillett, also known as Alfred Allen, was shot twice while sitting under a coconut tree in front of his home by a lone gunman. Scenes of Crime officers have since recovered an expended seven point six two shell, which is used in high powered rifles like an AK47 or an SLR. During a press briefing this morning, Crimes Investigations Branch Chief, Assistant Superintendent Aaron Guzman, told the press they have yet to determine why Tillett was killed and by whom.

“We do not have a suspect in custody. We’re still looking for witnesses. It is our understanding that two people may have witnessed this incident and I’m asking that they come in and give their statement to the police.”

“Are you looking into the possibility of it being maybe a revenge thing knowing that Tillett was just acquitted of a murder charge recently?”

“Last year a charge of murder was withdrawn against the gentleman and it could be, but at the end of the day presently there is as we say another murder where he was killed so the police need to investigate and find out who committed this murder and prefer charge against that person or persons concerned.”

Alfred Tillett walked away from a murder charge in December after two witnesses in the trial did not show up to testify. Tillett was arrested by police following the death of Bruce Cocom, who was gunned down in January of 2006 while standing on Central American Boulevard.
