…including multicultural fair and “Battle of the Bands

Story PictureAfter the Battle of St. George’s Caye Day Official Ceremony and the Citizen’s Parade, the action in the old capital continues at the M.C.C. Grounds on Princess Margaret Drive. At about eleven a.m., the city council will kick off the fourth annual multicultural fair on the green of the football field. But instead of sports, the arena will be the staging grounds for the annual Battle of the Bands competition. Belize City’s Deputy Mayor, Dion Leslie, says that this fest will have enough entertainment to keep everyone entertained throughout the night.

Dion Leslie, Deputy Mayor, Belize City
“The highlight of the show is the third annual battle of the bands, sponsored by belikin. We’ll have nine local bands from Belize going against, head to head against each other to see who is the best band in Belize. The bands include: Titiman and the Punta Rockers, the Danger Zone band, Gilharry Seven, the Young Stars, M.J. Vibrations, Super Latino band, D.T.H. Band, the New Dynamic band and the Youth Connection Band. So those nine bands will be going up against each other to see who is the best of the best.”

“Is this family entertainment?”

Dion Leslie
“Yes, it’s fun family entertainment. We will be having mechanical rides and games for the kids, we’ll be having a food court, we’ll be having a drop tank which is something that a lot of people are looking forward to—you know the drop tank where someone sits in the tank and you have to throw the ball to see if you hit the bud that makes them drop in the water. We’ll be having many events here: watermelon eating contest, soda biscuit eating contest. And then later in the night for the adults, we’ll be having the beer drinking contest and the adult Punta Rock contest.”

Entrance for tomorrow’s festivities at the M.C.C. costs five dollars for adults and two dollars for children. Anyone under seven enters for free. The winner of the Battle of the Band contest gets five thousand dollars and a contract to play in the September twenty first parade. The fair ends at eleven p.m.
