James Adderley sautés the stats for your sporting palate
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.
Week four of the Belize Bank super League playoffs brought a shocker that only could have come out of left field. So we take you to Sugar City where Orange Walk United hosted the defending champion, R.G. City Boys inside the People’s Stadium yesterday. Folks, we’re in the opening minute of this ballgame when Jarret Davis picks the pocket of Deon McCauley and goes all the way to give OW the 1-zip lead with this wicked left foot. Seven minutes later, Christopher Hendricks strips Shawn Thurton of this ball and his push beats City Boys defense, Stanley Reneau, as the home team jumps to a 2-zip lead. And one begins to wonder if this is the same City Boys who defeated OW last Sunday in a 4-zip blast at the MCC Grounds. We’re at the seventeenth minute when Lorenzo Diaz deals to Jarret Davis and the left foot rolls under Stanley Reneau to give Davis his second goal of the match for a 3-zip OW lead. Of course, it’s all Sugar City and Oliver Hendricks gets this chance to make it 4-nil but fails to make the proper connection with the ball. Meanwhile, only luck saves Stanley Reneau from conceding another goal when Oliver Hendricks hooks up with Jarret Davis who botches the finish. City Boys finally get some offense going when Tyrone Muschamp fires this left foot at goal but it’s right at Charlie Slusher who collects easily.
So we go to the second play and it’s Jarret Davis freeing himself up to launch this left foot in search of the hat trick, but is foiled by Stanley Reneau. However, nobody could deny Jarret Davis third of the match when he embarrasses the City Boys defense including goalkeeper Stanley Reneau with this individual effort at the fifty-fourth minute. A few minutes later Davis gets a crack at his fourth but Stanley Reneau’s response was adequate enough to prevent him. It’s Jarret Davis again on the attack and this time he does everything right, except to put enough pace on the ball. Nevertheless, at the sixty-seventh minute Lorenzo Diaz makes it 5-nil with this nice run that he finishes with a left foot swing that gets him onto the scoreboard. Orange Walk United totally dominated this ballgame but Dalton Cayetano came off the bench and gets on the scoreboard at the eighty-third minute to make this one a 5-1 final score.
People we had to speak to Belize Bank Super League President and Chairman of the newly formed National Football Association to find out what’s happening in these playoffs.
Michael Blease, President National Football Team
“It was very disappointing to us as the executive of the super league. We learned about it on Friday when we saw a number of City Boys playing and from Freedom Fighters playing. They were playing flat; their bodies were not recovering. They were playing three games back to back and I was shocked by this. We will not have any organization destroy this product.”
In the other match played on Saturday, Paradise Freedom Fighters and Placencia Assassin battled to a 2-all stalemate. Thus, with two matches per team remaining in this round of the playoffs, Paradise Freedom Fighters leads with seven points, City Boys and Orange Walk United show 6-apiece and Placencia Assassin shows 4 points. This Sunday July third, Orange Walk United will host Placencia Assassin at the People’s Stadium and City Boys United will host Paradise Freedom Fighters at the MCC Grounds in a must win situation.
In other football news, six teams participated in the under-fifteen football marathon staged by the Hattieville Youth Club over the weekend. Summers United of Belize City blanked San Pedro FC 2-zip to take the tournament while Medina’s FC of Belmopan beat the Hattieville team 5-4 on penalties to grab third place. We say good show to the organizer.
Here in Belize City, Stars Football Summer Camp for male and females five to sixteen years old kicks off on July eleventh and extends to July twenty-second. To get in, contact Stanley “Jordan” Reneau at 627-4041.
In softball news, play in the Belize City Softball Competition saw Telemedia blow out Hurricains 13-zip on Thursday while in Friday’s male matchup, OCEANA Pro’s handled the Police in a 12-5 blast. Female play continues today with Orchid Blazers facing Mirage Lady Rebels.
Turning to the Table Tennis scene, the RFG National Ranking Tournament was staged at the Belize Elementary Auditorium yesterday. In the cadet division, Harim Ochaeta beat Asher Arthurs 3-zip to win that division and Arthurs hurts his cause by missing the serve. Meanwhile, Mike Rivero needed five sets to get past Harold Young in the C Division Championship and here he smashes Harold Young’s serve to take that title. In the B Division championship, Nick Martin misses his smash attempt to give Ernesto “Brother” Rivero the game and with that, wins the match in a 3-2 score that hands him the title. Folks, the A division finals featured two big time players in a heated struggle. We’re tied at two games and we’re in the decisive fifth game when Nelito Ayuso forces Tux Vasquez to concede to the tenth point. He then goes for W and gets it when Vasquez misses his smash attempt to tie. Nelito Ayuso gets the W and the A-division title and we say congratulations.
